Multi Tube Hydraulic Rig
show user profile  RedStar
So this is something I have always been curious on how to do. How would you guys rig this? I really don't want to do wire parameters, I want to believe there is a way other than that?

Yeah, reaction manager ftw.

Now can I put reaction manager on a slider? From what I remember reaction manager is just what it sounds like, you move something and it reacts to it. Correct?

you use reaction manager to drive some slave objects by some master object's property e.g. the Z position. You can wire the master Z position to a slider then.
I just tried doing this with reactor manager (fucking hate this buggy piece of ****) and after setting up my states 3 times because it messed up the values like it always does, it worked. But everything moves simultaneously, which afaik is not what you want. Tried doing it with expressions, which worked fine for moving up, but when moving down again it would move all upper elements instead of only the top one, which again is not correct. Funny challenge, where is grotey :D ?

btw, you may consider using a limit controller for your upper element, to constrain how far it can be moved

Not enough info!
Do you have another object controlling this?
Does the center piece only move after the inner piece is fully extended?
You can do it with keyframes. I did it with a couple of paths and dummies and path constraints.
It really depends on what's controlling it.

In the end I would put it on a slider or a shape controlling the final output.
Yes the center only moves when first is maxed.

Here is a image giving you a better idea of how something like this can be used.

As the roof support gets taller, the hydraulics expand.

Ah!
I did something similar. I used look-at constraints to keep things in line.
I linked the bottom rotation to look at the top pivot and linked the inner cylinder to look at the bottom pivot.

Yeah hydraulics I can do no problem. I am curious about doing a hydraulic that has another hydraulic inside of it, and they both expand one at a time.

I cheated and wired the height of the middle cylinder to the z position of the top cylinder.
I still want to figure out how to do it properly.

jing fest!

I know reaction manager is like a beefy wire param, but is this what ur going for?

[edit] something tells me its more complicated than that

I'll have a go setting it up after work. Probably use a custom attribute holder. If it works I'll send you the file (maybe, depends on how generous I feel).

Hey, I set up a simple wire parameter and also a reaction controller version of your pump. Tried to do it better with a custom attribute holder and limited UI movements... but I forgot how. :(

If you want the file I can email it to you. Else, I suppose I can provide tips.

Here's a pic:

[edit] Note: the wire parameter version is dodgy, as in, it pushes both sections out at the same time. Yes you could set up two control sliders but that's a bit shit.

[edit] Actually, just went to your website and found your email - sent.
