Move to layer
show user profile  mike_renouf
Hi all,

I've updated to using Max 2015 recently and I'm having a nightmare with the new layer manager (new comapred to 2012 anyway).

How the hell do I move selected objects to the current layer? Where's my button gone?

Do I have to find them in the layers list and drag manually?

:(

I don't use 2015, but I have it installed for whenever someone sends me stuff I need it for.

Yeah I can't work out this layer thing! If I make an empty layer, and then select an object in the view, it selects the layer that object is in, so if I try to select the empty object, it's the exact same as telling max to de-select my selection.

I'm sure I'm just doing something wrong... right?

Fun little trick:

Have a few objects in your scene, select one. Hit Alt + Q to isolate selection, now hit Alt + Q again to toggle it back.

aha!

Just expand the layer it's in, and drag and drop it to the other layer.

I on't generally like to be the "I hate any change" kind of guy... but this does seem kind of stupid, especially when dealing with 1000's or even just 100's of objects.

yea its kind of a pain in the ass.. for moving a bunch of things i've found it quickest to ctrl+select the ones you want, create new temporary layer (so they get automatically dropped there) and then drag them to where they're supposed to be. Bonus points for renaming temp layer to be closer to their destination (if you have 100+ objects in the scene its going to take a while)

also make sure you got the latest service pack, it used to be a shitton more buggier then it is now

PS! you have to drag n drop them on the layer name not just any space in the expanded layer

Thanks for the tip with temp layer Stabby.

This whole thing is Autodesk at their usual dumb level. They're trying to make layers like those in AutoCAD, but failed. AutoCad's layers do work after 15 odd years of refinement. Max's used to. Now they suck.

I know I *go on about it*, but Outliner v2.1.5 still works fine in max 2015, it has a right click menu allowing you to arrange layers and objects without the need for dragging and dropping.

The only annoyances I have with this version is I can't duplicate layers and retain the nested structure, and you can't minimize it, it's a little quirky with the 2015 UI but I think it has something to do with the disappearing icon issue in 2015, a quick toggle fixes it.

All I want is to have a layer selected, some objects selected. And to hit a button that will then move my selected objects, to the selected layer. Outliner looks like it'll drive me mad too.

I'm fairly sure I'm going to stay with Max 2013 until the day I stop using Max entirely.

Get a job stacking shelves or something, maybe the night shifts. Security at a mall... man that would be sweet.

" to hit a button that will then move my selected objects, to the selected layer."

I'm with you there, always find myself reaching for this feature.

It was probably going to be added in version 3.0, before it was ditched.

Completely agree with FX - ive switched to Outliner aswell as putting in a request to Autodesk support to bring the feature back.

In outliner if you go to the options you can enable under User Interface > Show Node Add Button

very handy if you just select something, press the + button like previous verisons and its in your new layer. Works for nested too

I also like it better then the previous layer manager as when you select a layer it selects all its children, so you dont actually need to select the layer, click select children, then add to etc, its a few clicks less

I know the script isn't encrypted, and has a .dll as part of the install....I was wondering, is the "Add Node" button pure maxscript ?...would be great to get it to a shortcut or quad.

edit: I Found all the node behavior in core.ms...what to do with it I have no clue :)

Outliner is working fine for me after a couple of days of use now. I'm going to stick with it.

Thanks chaps!
