What would be the best way to model the sculptural shape wrapping the water tower? I'm guessing and editable ply with a series of modifiers? Any would is greatly appreciated!

So I can create a helix spline with one turn that will give the basic path.

Yeah. Model the piece flat, as complex as you need it, then path deform with the helix.

copy that helix spline, edit the spline with soft selection and the add a surface modifier.

Why play the guessing game with Path deformers and bend modifiers when you have full control with splines?

That's ok if you only just want to use a texture, do you get UVs with that method?

I think Grotes on the money with bend.

You add a surface modifier then it's all poly.
