modeling a large building/city

I am still working on the z28, but with that project nearing completion I was letting my mind wander to my next project. I want to model a generic flying city/tower. Now from what I have experienced with my camaro I think I would want to make displacement maps to create all of the repeating windows and details as opposed to actually modeling them (just to avoid crashes by keeping the polygon amount lower). I then thought of the Atlantis City model on stargate (stargate nerd...But StarTrek is way better because they had william shatner). That city looks extremely detailed and I was wondering what course of action was taken to get the detail (do you think they modeled the detail or did they made maps for it? They do have some very close up shots of the city that look pretty damn nice).

I am really going to try and watch the polygon count in this next project so pretty much I am asking, what is the best course of action for good detail with best performance, maps, or actually modeling it... Sorry if I digressed a little bit, I get distracted easily.

And another thing- how many iterations should one use with meshsmooth.. What is the standard maximum (I used 3 for my camaro and am starting to think 2 should of been used)?

one more- if you have an object with a few modifiers on it and then you collapse all to edit poly, will things work better as far as speed of render?

I was just blown away today in HMV (music DVD store etc...) at the city in Grand Theft Auto 4.

It would be interesting to look into the process behind creating that.

Cylon, I totally agree with that. They have done a fantastic job. I've been playing it for a month, and I am still finding new things to look at. I just love stealing cars and joyriding through the city. The game looks great, even on my laptop.

I have only played vice city, and only for a little while.. Not much of a video game player ever since I started 3ds max... Now that's really all I do with a computer.

I started playing Vice City about 2 weeks ago and I wish I hadn't, I can't get off it, it's very addictive and is a massive time waster. I've done no work as a result.

The game is huge, I still get lost, I am amazed at the scope. I don't even know if I'll get through it, but I need to finish off some work and then give GTA4 a go.

Absolutely, i`m still amazed by the amount of work that must have went into it. The environment lighting simulation is pretty deep too, art-director Aaron Garbut spoke a bit about it in this article:

It's like the begginings of the Matrix, I wonder how long it will be before they will be able to create a virtual environment where no one can tell the difference. It's inevitable.

Stay away from San Andreas, the world is the largest in the GTA series, lots of cool things to find.

The getaway has the best city, the creators had to recreate 40 KM OF london, also the trailer for the getaway 3 looked amazing but they cancelled it!!!! biggest waste of potential in history

Anyway! I have a concept in my head that I drew up in math class. I think it is a pretty unique idea that I haven't seen before. Kind of like a large jet turbine with a city on top and the circular fan around the still platform. The thrusters if you will would be placed without any rhyme or reason around the body, from largest to smallest going down. What do you think of the idea (not the conceptual drawing because it blows)?
