Modeling How to Helix Shape
show user profile  LeonardoGarza
Hi guys, Im having a hard time trying to understand the basics of how to model this shape. I have been trying with cones, helix, etc. But I cant reach the figure.

Does anyone knows or can explain me how to get this shape in which we have a helix extrude type, but also bend it sideways.

create a plane.

bend modifier,

taper modifier.

If you play with the settings a bit, you should get it spot on.

This 2 pieces I use before bending the paper, so would you recomend me to make a plane with that shape and then bend, or a rectangular plane just bend it and taper.

The thing was I first try just bending the figure of the last picture, but it seems I have to do a bending with displacement cause it doesnt get the same shape.

yep.

so create plane, add edit poly.

make this:

subdivide to get the image on the right.

bend, taper (if necessary) and then shell.

edit: you'll have to do some things like moving and rotating the bend gizmo so that it gets it's desired effect, but you'll get it.

Getting problems with the bending, I also try after adding taper. Do I have to to add several separate bendings? The problem is that it bends not just one side, as if it deforms, and I dont know how to bend just in a specific area.

Well basically Ive got the first fold. Any way to do a second fold without moving what I got correct? And how to do the fold.

Does soft selection helps? I try it but I cant manipulate it as I wish to.

first, rotate the gizmo so that it's in line with the innermost and outermost corner, then try bending it.

if you like, you can email me the file to jamie at pixellurgymedia dot com and I'll play around with it.

Spline modeling would also be a valid approach, since it's all straight between the two openings.

I think he tried spline modelling first without much luck. although, if he did manage to find a good way to do it with splines, it may offer a more elegant looking structure.

Select poly modifier with soft selection enabled below your second bend modifier might help you finish the bend off.

Try an FFD box with custom settings? That will take longer, but it will give you more control.. Also, if you go inside of the bend mod you can play around with the center/gizmo to help too (don't know if you knew that or not, not trying to be condescending or anyting.. Don't know your skill level)..

EDIT: the ffd will have to be below the bend mod btw if you plan on using both.

Thanks to all for your answers, Im trying all of them. The real problem is that i´m not as skilled with them, so I´m studying how they work one by one to get the best result.

I will keep on trying, and updating. Thanks!

Well, jeeze... I tried what I suggested, and now I have a few questions as well (not to hijack the thread or anything, but now I'm confused...

Why does this happen? I cannot seem to show the end result and edit the FFD box at the same time..

Oh no!

Model this with splines, should not be a problem.. else hand model this adding edge loops as needed and turbo smoothing the final result. this is a pretty simple shape.
