How to make a 3D model from 3Dsmax to a sprite using 3Dmax or anything?
show user profile  Dudecough
Hey guys,

I'm currently making a game with a bunch of friends and they're all programmers and coders with me being their one and only "Designer".

My friend Ryan, my boss so to speak, want my 3Dmodels rendered into sprites 64x64 and i have NO idea how to do it.

The game we're making is an arcade-like spacecraft shooter with a top-down view. So he wants my 3D models into 64x64 sprites. How do i do it?

Render them as 64x64 png's or tga's

i would say, choose top ortho view. and then create an array, where each object in the array is equal distance apart but contains every needed variation of your object for animation.

for example, whipped up this little guy in a few minutes to demonstrate, tehehehe.

and then made an array, and rendered it from top ortho:

How would that work if you have an animated character?

Probably the same, except output each frame?

This thread might help. There is a script in it the renders out the animation and alpha of each frame to a horizontal or vertical strip

create your animated character.
make a clone and delete skin/physique modifier. make an array using that object. add a morph target to the first object. go to first frame, select animated model as morph target, set value to 100. go to next frame, select next object, apply morph modifier, select animated model as morph target etc. etc. repeat for all objects in the array.

click the tools menu, select array. if in doubt, search for it in the F1 tutorials.

Do i HAVE to put them into an array or i can just simply render them from a top viewpoint?

yeah if you want but that defeats the purpose of a sprite sheet. and it will look demented.
