Mocap solution, sweet and simple ?
show user profile  soontekk
So let's say i want to play with a model i made, record my own moves and transfer them (realtime or not) onto my CAT rig (or other) ?

I have a Kinect and the sony motion camera.
Go with brekel tools or the ipisoft kineconnect thingy.
Would this be enough ?

Cheers, Kurt

Depens on the accuracy i think.
We are also looking into it and it seems that Kinect 1 is really good at the task.
Ideally you want 2 kinects so you can als record from the side so you dont get obscured arms and legs by your body.

Hi Ijzerman, yeah, it seems i'll have a go at it with the old kinect i have and see where that leads me, if it is promising i might get a second kinect to get more accuracy and rotation support etc.
If not this will end up on my pile of trial and errors (big pile that one).. :)

Sounds cool either way, keep us updated! I wouldn't mind knowing the ins and outs of "home brew" motion capture.

Yes. Please keep us updated. I was thinking about setting up a home Mocap setup in my basement. :)

I did a fair amount of research before my dissertation on ipisoft. It works very well. I didnt do it with kinects i used 6 Sony playstation eye cameras. The software itself isnt fantastically stable and will crash out during processing if you dont have a very high spec machine to do the grunt work though.
The new kinect SDK hasnt been fully released so there currently arent many third party apps that support using its functionality so for now youre pretty much stuck with the old kinect cameras. At my university we had a room with i think 6 kinects all running into the same machine and it worked really well. sometimes better then the professional vicon capture system that was upwards of 70k.

If you have a bit of cash then kinects will work fine for home mocap. after a little cleanup the data is decent, but only if your machine has a decent spec.

I recommend 2 Kinects and Ipsoft, I did a test with one Kinect only, the results were this quick an durty setup |

Also. How does your setup handle quick motion? Like running on a treadmill for instance?

I set the skeleton up with character studio. I linked the bone meshes to the character studio bones, no skinning at all, I just had to make shure that the pivot points matches the CS pivots. This setup with the the Kinect's tracks your body motion only not your wrists or ankle movement.

The other cheap way and more effective (1600cdn) is called Perception Neron. This lil bugger comes with tiny accelerometers and they go on your sexy body and records it, and it's wifi :D

Hell why not just go to there website :D
