mistakes in the tutorials?

I am a beginner working through the tutorials of Max 2010. I have noticed that almost every tutorial, even if you follow it to the letter it always ends up with different results. Why is this. Right now I am frustrated because I am working in the Intro to Materials and Mapping Tutorials, The Army Compound. I am at the step to apply a material to the Barraks roof. I follow it right to the letter and it looks like crap and in no way resembles the examples in the tutorial. Is anyone familiar with this problem?

It seems that somewhere between Step 6 and Step 10 is where the problem lies. In step 9 it says that when you choose Y as the Alignment axis and click fit that the mapping Parameters for UVW Map modifier should automatically change to 7.04m. It doesnt, It changes to 2.109m. I'm not sure if you can see anything from the screenshot. I noticed the rules of the forums are you cannot have an image larger than 800x600 So when I resized it thats what it ended up with.

Here is my updated image

Since you have a specific problem, I think it's ok if you post larger images in just this thread.

Hmm.. the words say choose Y alignment, but the pic shows Z chosen, which seems to work...change that to Z and see if it looks OK. You may have to crank the V tiling to 2.

I tried Z Allignment and it still didnt correct it to 7.04. I entered the values manually and bumped up the scale to 2 which looked pretty good although not like the results in the picture but I'm going to move on in the tutorials now. Maybe I'll learn enough on my own in the future so I know what I'm doing. If anyone does work through this and know whats wrong I would be very greatful. Below is what I ended up with
