Mirror vertex-transformations without the mirror-modifier?

I'm doing some mod-work for a game, exporting 3D models, changing some things and importing them again. It's going great but I'm trying to overcome some things in 3DS Max.

I want to do something really basic like making symmetric changes to the vertices of some meshes. The main problem with using the Mirror-modifier is that I have to cut the mesh in half but it've got single polygons stretching over the middle so that can't really produce a clean cut.

Another problem with that seem to be that some modifiers that are baked into the game model-format disappear from the Mirrored half of the mesh.

I'm trying to get around this completely. The Edit Mesh-modifier works flawlessly and doesn't affect anything that at-least appears to be baked in. There's no easy way or even plugin that simply mirrors actions in the Edit Mesh-modifier over a plane?
