I'm posting these reluctantly as I'm sick of the sight of them, they are from a past project for designing a new bitcoin miner case.

I'm rendering everything out at 1920 x 1080 for my much neglected portfolio, I've been staring at these for far too long and have little incentive to make them better....was hoping some brutal honesty might kick my mojo back into gear.

These are still using the clients requested overall colour tone / mood, which I find a little dull and too "brownish".

I also cocked up on the second one...the radiator at the back is a bit messy, was going to cover it with a dof effect :)

Looks slick man! I have to shade some motherboards for the first time in the next coming weeks. Any pointers? What's the easiest way to draw the circuits on the board itself? I figured vector in AI by hand would be the most optimal route.

First impression when I saw them was "oh cool".. they look good on my phone

The only thing Im not fond of is the tubes, I dont like how the r not smooth paths. The only reference I have of tubes like these ones are the tubes for my cpu water cooler, they are nearly identical (strong tubes) but they r smooth

Looks good tho

@9krausec : entire thing was modeled, scene is 4 mill polys.

@digs : Yeah maybe it's the tubes... make it look a bit old fashioned..remind me of earth worms :/

..thanks for the feedback, need to get a fresh outlook on these, I did an absolute ton of work for the project for a pretty low fee, with the promise of a dual xeon monster pc if the bitcoin launch was wasn't :(

Cheers guys, good to have other eyes on these, I've lost the love for them....couple more...

Rendering kills me, only 4 buckets, but I'm setting aside a few hours everyday to get these done.

These are nice.

Now that the client side is done, you might want to take out the brown color and add some curves in post to crush the blacks a bit.

"Crushing the blacks" is generally seen as a bad thing for stuff like this. Probably me being a pedant but you can adjust the contrast in these images a ton without losing any more shadow detail. I agree though a curves adjustment is a good call, probably just bad terminology on your part (if so apologies). :)


I think it would have benefited from a more tailored lighting setup and there are some areas that look too glossy to me but overall it looks very good, nice work.

How do you crush the blacks?

I heard around French-English border they kinda need to crush some.

P.S. It was a serious question, regarding the 3D crushing of blacks. Heard the term numerous times, don't know what it entails.

Except for the last image, all of them are pretty boring.

More interesting angles like the last, more lighting, more mood.

Try (if at all possible) to tell a story.

What Bolts said. The quality is pretty fucking fabulous, but for a statement, for a calling card of your work, i want to remember you for a reason. Make it memorable. Tell my why.

Yeah, there's so much detail that you can use to your advantage and make for some really interesting pieces/images.
