Anyone know of a good messenger replacement ?
show user profile  Mashedpot8er
Hi all title says it all really. I'd like to be able to use it like messenger, and use my existing contacts. I started messenger up today and it says that there is a newer version available and it won't let me log in without downloading the new one. But when I try to download, it says not available for my OS version (XP 64bit SP2). So 'm caught in a loop. Feckers. Maybe there is a new 64 bit one somewhere, or maybe there is a way to stop it wanting to update, so I can log in normally. Anyone else come across this ?

There is a web-based version of messenger.

you could try pidgin. it allows you you have multiple messengers in one. not exactly what your looking for but worth a shot. i use it and it's pretty sweet.

My lead had the same problem this morning (and I imagine thousands of others did too). Apparantely there is a torrent available somewhere that will install and/or allow you to use msn on a 64bit machine.

Silly fucking microsoft.

I use trillian. I tried miranda, pidgin, trillian and meebo (web based).
Chose trillian as it gave me the least problems (only transfers are quirky, everything else is dandy.
you can use MSN, ICQ, AIM, Yahoo and IRC on it.

Thanks for the quick responses. It does appear as if microsoft are forcing upgrades to windows vista / 7 with this little turn. F**kers. I never have liked Microsoft live really, seems to slow things down sometimes.

I had a quick look about and Trillian seemed to be a good one, so I have installed it and it works great so far. I did install pidgin once to have a look at it, it also worked great, but it didn't seem to have a button to go straight to my hotmail emails. So trillian it is for the minute.

Thanks again chaps :)

I`ve just had exactly the same problem, argh! The c*nts!

I had to search high and low just to get a recent version which runs on XP64, and now it`s useless. The f*&*ing f*&*ers.

Please excuse my expletives. Think i`ll try trillion or pidgin then..

I use pidgin to replace AIM and MSN, I love its customizability. I haven't tried trillian though, maybe I'll give it a go.
