Well , the season is upon us. We have our sigs (mine is coming) and everything is getting jolly.

This year, I propose this:

A maxforums Christmas tree.

This is how ths will work.

All members can model and render out an ornament, send us (or post) the ornament max file and texture along with a render

We (all of us) will model a Tree and add your ornament to our tree.

The finished trees should be ready in time for christmas.

You can make your own star and at the end we will all post our tree renders.

No contest No competition

Just some neat little community-shared work.

Our finished trees with ornaments should be ready and posted by midnight on Christmas

and when I wake up on Christmas, your renders will be a neat Christmas morning gift to us all.

I was planning on doing my own Christmas image this year, and it actually fits into this theme perfectly. I wish I could post the Christmas trees I mdoelled at work.

Soo... everyone models a tree, and their ornament.

Then we share the ornament files on here, and add each other's ornaments to our own trees?

I guess we wont be going with the simple reflective and shiny ball eh? This christmas tree is gonna look craaaazy.

And to top it off, we use Nik Clarks neat little snow script? To... y'know, add the icing to the cake, to so to speak.

everyone models there own tree and ornament.

post the ornament render and a zipped file with max file and material

and we take those ornaments and add them to our own trees.

so the trees will be personalized.

Please refrain from making your ornament 10000000000000000000000000000000000000 polys

On another note, we will probably run into version compatibility issues along the way with this (importing others meshes from other versions of MAX).

We aren't really going for low poly
but your right.

Let's say no more than 10,000 polys per ornament.

If we have 100 people participate (unlikely) then our ornaments will only be a million polys
add in the tree and a scene if you wish and the whole scene shouldn't be more than 2 mil polysd
which isnt an unreasonable sum for a nice scene.

Also , please only make one OFFICIAL ornament.
It would be neat if we could look at the ornament and know who make it.

For instance if we saw a Fender Guitar or a sparkly round ornament with a stratocaster carved into it hanging from the tree we would know who made that.

Happy, you make a fine point.
Compatibility issues.


So, to take care of that, let's use Bobo BFF
and export our models to work in version 6 (which a lot of people are still using)

if you are using a version prior to 6, then then files will open anyway.

if you are making your tree in 8, then all files will work.
if you are making your tree in 4.2, you will need to download max 8 and export al the ornaments using the BFF script.

Sound simple enoguh? sure it is.

Is christmas day the deadline for this? I don't really have time yet to try this out but i will have time next week.

christmas day is the deadline for your final tree renders.

So HOPEFULLY we will have some ornaments prior to that.
