Mental Ray rendering problem!!
show user profile  MAX_kaos
I'm using a cube to demonstrate the problem... I've assigned a simple JPEG as the environment BG. The cube and sphere with a standard material render without issues. However, when I give them a car paint material, they become semi transparent.... Notice how ONLY the BG image is revealed... ???? Anyone have any solutions?

ok, I'm never going to be able to explain this very well - but I'll try!

The objects aren't semi transparent. What's happening is they're reflecting your background.

If you open your environment tab (where your background map is) - then drag the map onto an empty sphere in your material editor - you'll see the mapping coordinates are set to Screen. This means the background will reflect completely flat. Even if you change that sphere to solid glass, you'll still get the same flat reflection.

If you change the mapping type to spherical, that'll give you more realistic reflections as you'll effectively have your box and sphere inside a spherical environment.

If you save your render as a png or tga (as those types support alpha channel) you could then composite your render into your original background image.

Alternatively, look up Environment/Background Switcher (mi)

Hope that makes a little sense!
