Mental Ray - Light and Glass
show user profile  ccampbell
So i havent done a MR render in quite some time and cant figure this out. I have spherical light objects illuminated with arch and design mat and self illumination. the half on the left are behind a raytrace glass material with
100 transparency
40 relections
1.4 refraction

Any idea why my lights are lit on the right and not on the left?

not sure what the ray tracing glass material is, but I know that that ray tracing can create dof (which could knock out some of the light ?) ... maybe try lowering the ior?

when using any of the glass presets in a&d they need no self illumination, just a solid mesh (on solid and physical presets). Then you just place your light inside like you would in reality

I''m not trying to fake the light scattering inside the light. The problem is self illumination is not visible through my glass which is a glass wall in this case (standard raytrace material not a&d for the glass panes). not the outter casing of a light. if that makes sense.

Not certain, but I'm guessing its because self-illumination is a fake solution.

You're expecting a realistic lighting result but not using photometric lights (which are designed to create realistic lighting with global illumination techniques). I'd follow up with Stabby's method and it will probably solve the issue.

Thanks the physical didn't increase the render time as much i thought it might good call. Thanks.
