Mental Ray, HDRI and Camera Matching
show user profile  madfrankie
Hi All,
Wondering if anyone can help me out. I'm going to be inserting CG into some filmed footage, I've got everything set up for camera tracking and I've got no issues with that side of things.
I want to use a HDRI probe that I've created for global illumination on the CG objects to go in the filmed footage so that they get the same lighting that the subjects in the film do but I only know about using the Environment Map in Max to do both tasks.

To explain:
I use put the video footage in the Environment Map slot for camera tracking.
I put my light probe in the Environment Map slot with spherical mapping to illuminate a CG item.

The problem I have is that I cannot do both. Either I have the footage in there or the probe in there. Is there a method that I can put the probe in somewhere else to give me the global illumination/reflections on the CG object while keeping the environment map slot free for my video footage?
I'm using Mental Ray as my renderer if that helps...

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I'm not 100 percent about this because i don't really use mental ray. But can you put the HDRI for reflections in each reflective materials environment slot and the HDRI for GI in the skylight slot?

You should put the HDRI probe in the "use bitmap" slot (something along those lines) of your skylight to use it for lighting. For the reflections, you can put the bitmap in the environment slot for the reflecting material.

Fantasic! thanks guys. chucking the probe in for the reflections channel on the material worked a treat.
Not too sure about the skylight thing for the illumination though. I haven't really explored the whole skylight side, can anyone point me in the right direction for working out how that all functions?

Don't stick it in the materal env slot.

Use the Environment/Background switcher material in the environment slot. Much less work than changing all the materials.
