Hi, can anyone please help?
I am trying to use Metal Ray with 3ds Max 9 x64.
I have looked at lots of tutorials but they normally miss a vital bit of info, or they approach it in completely different ways. FRUSTRATING! I decided to follow a tutorial that appeared in 3ds Max Essentials. It had a step by step guide to render a Tuc-tuc.
In my sean I have a: Mr area Spot Sky01
I have modelled half a sphere and put a HDRI map in my (Materials) and in the (Sky01) slot and (Environment Map) slot. I have put a simple curved backdrop in for the robot to stand on. I am using standard (Arch+Design) Materials.
Things I am having problems with are.
1 Do I need both HDRI and Sky01 etc or can I just have HDRI to illuminate the image? 2 I don’t like the hard shadow from the Mr Area Spot? 3 There is an orange ‘glitch’ on the robot arm and I don’t know why?
I have put some images in Photobucket to possible help.
Any other comments would be great :) Cheers :)

You can use just the HDRI, but I find I get better results from realistic light setups.
2 I don’t like the hard shadow from the Mr Area Spot?
In the settings, you can make the point the light is emitted from larger, which will give you softer shadows. Change it from point to disc, etc.
3 There is an orange ‘glitch’ on the robot arm and I don’t know why?
Could be a number of things. Try rendering from a different angle, to see what results you get. Could it be co-planar faces?
Oh, and your render looks pretty good so far, way better than most beginner's MR attempts!

Cheers Nik :)
Will try a differant angle to start. When you say realistic light set up. What do you mean?

Well, I try to match the light setup I'd use in a photography studio. So, large soft lights, etc. If it's an outside shot, I'd use the daylight system.

Really sorry Nik I am struggling to know what you mean. Which lights should I use to get soft lights and hopefully shadows? And what’s the daylight system?
When I follow a tutorial for Mr I don’t really understand what I am doing. I just do it parrot fashion :(

In the MR Area Spotlight settings, find the Area Light Parameters Rollout. Increasing the width and height here will make the shadows softer.
To get the Daylight system, choose Create / Systems and choose the Daylight system. Say yes to the question that pops up.Go to the modifier tab and change the Sunlight and Skylight to MR sun and MR skylight, saying yes to questions that pop up.
Sorry the answer to brief, very busy day today.
