| Maya: Use max material ID's? |
Stianbl |
Hi there,
So, I'm still trying to learn Maya and Mental Ray, and it's a pain in the ass when I'm used to max. I cant believe people find maya easier to use. I have to click a lot of buttons to do the same as one button in max.. Anyways, to the point..
I want to focus on lighting and rendering in maya for now, so I'm still modeling inside of max. Export as .obj and import.
Are there a way to get the material ID's over? So I can texture it in maya using my matID selection from max?
And when exporting. Should I remove turbosmooth, export, import, and then add smooth again in maya? Would probably be better that way.
And, any good tips for me to learn maya from max would be great. Thanks =)

Thanks. Will give it a try.
Whats the mayas equivalent to max's Multi/sub material? Dont remember the name in my head, but the one you use with multiple mat ID's.

Thanks =) I'll go through that thread and see what I can learn.
Do any of you guys have any tips for me to move from max to maya? When I say move I dont mean I'll quit using max, but I need to learn enough maya to finish this dobble-unit project in 3d animation.
My tasks are lighting and rendering, and for now I've only used max with VRay, and rendered stills in high quality (20min per still ++). I really need to learn maya now.
I've got a lot of pdf tutorials covering mental ray, and also a lot of maya tutorials, but if I could get some starters that would be great. Mainly concerned about lighting, as I don't have too much experience with lighting for animation.
Thanks again =)
EDIT: Oh, and that thread is 8 years old now.. Everythime I think I find a good post it's ages old. But it did explain that in maya I can just assign a material to a selection, so that should work. (If there are newer better techniques now I dont know, but should work for now)

there's not as much of a need for multisubs in maya... things are alot more nodal with hypershade so assigning multiple materials to a single object is alot easier.
that being said, i would recommend some of the gnomon training dvd's for maya, they really helped me alot.
as for the rest, snag vray4maya; works in the same way with some awesome additional features that you wont find in the max version (and for fucking christs sake, referencing works properly).
last two projects i've worked on were in maya using vray. had a great time, and am probably gonna switch for the most part (though things like volumetric caustics keep me coming back to max).
