MAXSCRIPT - Sorting in 3d space
show user profile  noob-saibot
Hi Guys,

It's been a long while since my last time here, thought my login wouldn't work anymore :) I'm always around, but not as active anymore :( Not doing any 3d nowadays.

I wanted to ask you guys a question, I need help putting a script together, or just an idea of how to go about it, this is the scenario:

I have a bunch of boxes, some are square, some are rectangular and I have a container which is much larger and will hold these boxes.

What i need to do is a script that will automatically sort these items within the container in the most efficient way (just by translation and rotation)

Please help!

If I was unclear please tell me,

Thanks so much!

--EDIT

I've done some tests using the seed fill algorithm but with not so good results.
I guess it is easy, i just cant figure it out

-EDIT2

I don't really need any actual/real code, just an Idea of how to do it, I can take it from there

-EDIT 3

Found an algorithm call "bin packing", does what i need, I just tested it need but to tweak it, but might do the trick

This is not a trivial problem to solve.

Especially not optimally.

Google will be your friend on this one.
