MaxScript question: Use a CA to control objects looking at the CA owner?

Say I have a group of scene nodes ($Look1, $Look2, etc.), which all use LookAt constraints for their rotation controllers. All of them use as a target another specific scene node ($Target).

I am using a custom attribute to put a slider control on $Target. I want to set it up so that the target weight on $Look1, $Look2, etc. for $Target is controlled by that slider. In other words, when the slider is at maximum, they will all point directly at $Target, and when the slider is all the way down, they will ignore it.

The problem comes in when I try to add the "Look" objects to $Target's CA as a nodeTab.

"append $Target.nodetab $Look1" for example, returns "Runtime error: MAXPB2ArrayParam append failed due to dependency loop"

I'm a little confused by this. I can see why $Look1 would be dependent on $Target, but in what way is $Target considered dependent on $Look1? At any rate, what is the appropriate solution for this?
