MAxscript Competition
show user profile  Jock
I know weve got some talented people in here who are handy with Maxscript (Garp comes to mind) so wondered if this might be something you'd be interested in.

$1000 up for grabs.

This is not a competition.

This sort of thing is a scam. It would cost them more than $1000 to have someone code a proper tool for them so they are trying to get it done on the cheap.

Why anyone would waste their time on this crap I don't know. You could put hours into coding something only to have them reject your entry and steal any good code ideas from it.

Stay away.

I totally agree.
(lol at 'overlapping faces')

But thank you Jock for posting.
It's the thought that counts. :)

Yeah, good point Garp. Sorry Jock, wasn't taking a dig at you. It's the thought that counts!

Aye no worries guys.

When I actually take a minute to think about it, its pretty obvious, like you say it would cost them more to get it done properly but this way they get 100's of folk to do it for them and just pay a few of them.

Ah well...

It's not much of a prize considering what they'd pay to have it professionally made.

I know we slam almost anything like this, but let's not forget about younger generations / students / beginners. Yes, it's a giant scam to essentially get work done on the cheap, but it's just a standard competition... you enter with your abilities, and if you win you get a prize. It's less pressure on the applicants since they're not being hired to do a job, if they enjoy what they do and they'd be doing it anyway, why the shit not just do it for a chance to win a grand?

Very true, and if I wasn't as busy as I am at the moment, I'd give it a look.

I'm not in the habit of slamming anything for the sake of it. But this is a kind of practice that's becoming more and more common place, in a lot of areas. And it's bad for everyone.
I might not be able to do anything against it but at least I can not encourage it.
Just my personal take.

My problem with it is, it's not the sort of project you do for a competition. It's way too niche and technical. A more appropriate challenge woul be to write a modelling tool or something. Something that everyone including the author can use. This turbo squid tool needs to be written by a professional as it needs to be properly designed and written so that others can maintain it. It could easily take 3 weeks to do this tool really well. The chance at $1000 is a pretty poor reward.
