Well this is the first time where i am telling you what i am going to do but not showing you anything yet. Thats because i have been really busy.

Here is the dealio. I am going to enter even if i don't finish before the deadline. And i will still finish it even if i don't. I had a death in the family so thats why i don't know if i will be able to finish it by the deadline.

Well what i am going to create is hopefully a nice dirty dumpster. If i have time i will put it into an alleyway. Nothing super gross its just dirty. I got to keep it simple since i just learned about pelt mapping and i am not looking forward to it.

I was looking for references, and i found this. Its kinda wierd they must sell like every thing thats possible to model on that site.

Ofcoarse i am not gonna cheat. Even if i did you guys would be able to tell cause its not like i am gonna pull something great off with like no in between stages.

EDIT: You know what i am scrapiing the dumpster. Cause there is no way that i am going to be able to pelt map that thing right cause i can't even pelt map a teapot. I think i will just do a simple alley way.

Okay so i decided to model the dumpster plainly because. I can't texture for crap anyways. So doing an alley scene won't get me any where.

I have know how to take a basic square into PS and then edit it and import it thanks to stianbl. But this is a whole nother can of worms.
Soooooooooooooooo.
Unless i like take some pictures of the fronts and sides of dumpsters and place them on my model. There is no way i m going yo get this textured. But that is kinda cheating right?

So maybe i will just submit it with only the modeling done and scrape up a few points. Not that they matter any way.

What???Are you modeling it for a game? Oh yeah its a still for this contest, Making excuses for something is not going to get it done!. I have noticed in your other posts that you have been whining ALOT! It maybe due to your loss(i am sorry about your family's loss it hurts to loose someone your close to) i dunno, I am no therapist. That dumpster is a cube and you would map it the same way. This round is actually about texturing, try and learn as you go.

my young little friend, first off i'm sorry to hear about the loss.

secondly, why on earth are you giving yourself an excuse to fall short of a goal?

honestly, your young (17 according to your stats) and there are a million other things that you could be doing with your free time instead of sitting in front of a computer... so if it's what your gonna decide to do... then do it and do it well...

i swear to god if you took all the time you take to make replies and posts about pointless shit on this forum and just sat down and worked your ass off you wouldn't be able to make up excuses like you can't do shit in PS...

thirdly, taking pictures of something and putting them on the side of something digital is no less cheating then using a box primitive instead of extruding a planar face and capping the other end... the tools of which you use to accomplish your goal are the only ones youll need...

in other words, please stfu... use whatever you need to and get to work.

(i hope you can see this reply in the light its meant, not as redicule or harshness but tough love)

"Unless i like take some pictures of the fronts and sides of dumpsters and place them on my model. There is no way i m going yo get this textured."

If you can't take any pictures of dumpsters yourself you can always find photos online that you can use.

Off the top of my head i seem to remember mayang having some quite nice photos of dumpsters and skips (mayang.com/textures is the url if i remember right)

also take a look on google image search for dumpsters, skips, rusty metal, corroded metal, painted metal etc etc you will find loads of reference that you will be able to stitch together to make a nice texture for this.

edit: i've got slow fingers...i think im saying the same kinda thing as bolt...i.e. get on and try stuff, thats how you learn

These guys are right. Remember my beretta?
http://www.maxforums.org/thread.aspx?TID=384573&P=6

It took me a long ass time in PS to get those textures to look how I want them. I still wasn't satisfied with the way they turned out, but I am damn proud I was able to even pull off something like that.

pelt mapping is for organic objects, this isn't an organic object
Just use a simple box uvw map, make sure all the sides are of equal length. then add your uvw unwrap modifier.

Hey click, whats your email addy? and or msn? i'll see if i can help you out

Hey, does anyone know any good free screen cap recording software, i wouldn't mind actually doing a vtm on unwrapping and texturing a low poly dumpster. It's about time i do a tutorial of some kind, and a dumpster is a pretty good object for this

EDIT: never mind, already started downloading camstudio

click here: if you are serious about learning max. you need to put some effort into this.

Read the helpfile on UVW mapping.

Apply an unwrap modifier.

follow the helpfile.

Basicly you apply the modifier
select some faces
go into the unwrap window and position them.
then close the unwrap window.
select some more faces
go back into the unwrap window
move them where you want them on the texture sheet
weld the vertices if you need to.
close the window
unwrap some more.

It's not the best way to do it but it will make the most sense as you get started.

You can do this.
You can make a dirty dumpster in an alleyway, fill the whole lot with crap and then render it.

You want help, let me know.

But I am not going to assist you with any more posts like the one above.

Your UV's are screwed because you havent even tried to see how its supposed to work.

Alright Timpa well i acctually did 2 tuts on unwrapping all though niether were great i did learn a good deal. When i posted last i forgot a step and so i redid it and this is what i have. I even went in to photoshop and added the side and front of the dumpster but when i go back into max it doesn't let me add the bitmap.

On the whole. I remade the dumpster cause the last one was crappy and i made a little scene for it here is what i have.
Do you have an idea on what the black mark on the box could be?
Also how do you think i could improve the lighting? I just used a basic skylight.
