Maxforums Tournament 7 - Round 3
show user profile  mrgrotey

^^Click above to got to the main tournament site^^

Deadline:
3 weeks ...ish, End of play Sunday 19th September 2010
(That's Sunday Night in your time, don't worry about time zones)

Theme: Inefficient Torture Device

Welcome to Round 3!

The theme for this round is brought to you from toldaddy who suggested it ages ago.
In this round you are to create a device of torture. Most importantly, the device must be really inefficient i.e. require the most amount of energy to produce the least amount of actual result. It must be really bad at what it does.
It doesn't even have to be a device that tortures humans. It could be used to torture robots, aliens, coconuts, gerbils, crazy frogs; it's up to you!

The method of torture is also completely up to you:

Tickling
cutting
stretching
battering
whipping
food deprivation
water boarding
making dizzy
electrocution
strangling
peeling fingernails back
paper-cuts

It could be petrol/gas powered, electrical, wooden crank handled, nuclear, wind, hydro or solar powered. It could be in machine form, hand tool form or even a Rube Goldberg machine if you're up to it. But it must ultimately deal out some form of torture to it's victim.

The more inefficient the better.
The more complex the better.
The funnier the better.
The more random the better.
The more... you get the idea.

Scoring:
Each entry will be judged individually and given points ranging from 0-10 from five different categories, these being:

Modelling
Texturing
Lighting
Inefficiency
Awesomeness!

Submission:
At the end of the round you are to submit an image to the limits detailed in the sections below as your final entry and it must be sent to:

mrgrotey@gmail.com

Make sure you include the words "Maxforums Tournament" followed by your username in the subject. This helps me sort through all the e-mails I get and will ensure that I don't miss your submission. I will e-mail you as soon as possible confirming your submission.

Image Limits:
.jpg and no larger than 800 x 600. Both Portrait and Landscape orientation is accepted. Multiple images will be accepted. However, only one image is necessary. Do not feel that you have to do any more for the same submission as they would all be judged together as a single idea/submission.

Modelling:
All models used must be made exclusively for this round. You should not use any models that were made outside of this round either by you or ones you have bought.
You may use any modelling techniques that you see fit, poly modelling/box modelling/nurbs/spline modelling/displacement .etc .etc

Texturing:
You may use any materials or textures. Special effects such as fur, fire, water, gas, translucency, dispersion, radiance, displacement, etc, are not only permitted, but also encouraged.

Software:
You can use any 3d program and renderer you want. Post production is allowed and encouraged.

Who can participate?:
Any registered member of Maxforums can enter the tournament at any time, regardless of how many rounds have gone by. Failure to join in the first or any other round is not a disqualification from the later rounds. However it goes without saying that entries submitted after the closure date will not be entered into the scoring.

Since Maxforums is all about promoting learning you are required to post a Work In Progress (WIP) thread for your submission/s. If you want to submit more than one piece go ahead! but there must be a WIP thread for each.
I want this tournament to be as fun as previous ones, and hopefully people can learn a thing or two from it.

Please post in the Work in Progress forum and Label your thread as follows

Maxforums Tournament 7 - Round 3 - User Name

Unfinished Work:
If the deadline is approaching and you can't get your entry done in time, Submit it anyway and just let me know it's not finished. You will still get partial points which is better than nothing. With this scoring system you need all the points you can get, so it would be in your best interest to submit whatever you've got. I may not have time to dig through the forum and scoop all the unsubmitted images this time. If I don't see it, you won't get any points.

Judges:
The judges for the tournament will be:

Michael Grote - mrgrotey - www.mgrote.com
Robert McNair - bobbyboy - 3D Art Portfolio
Jesse Brophy - jbrophy - www.jessebrophy.com
Daniel Mandic - Horizon - www.dice3d.co.cc

I think that just about covers everything. If there's something I missed, or something you're not clear about, please ask right away.

Have fun, and let's see what you guys come up with.

Good luck.

Holy cow - there's no chance of taking a flyer at this one; planning will be everything! Nice idea and I'm looking forward to failing. hehe

I was considering competing but didn't like the topic that much. Kind of reminds me of the old topic, not sure exactly what it was, but I did this keyboard for it.

I decided not too, as I've got some other stuff to work on. If there is a fourth round, a legitimate shot of me joining. I miss 3D.

I don't think its a bad topic Mr. Grotey, just one that requires a fair bit of thought before making a start. I've been unsure for a whole week of what I could do which really fits the bill - it was only last night that the penny finally dropped.

Poopy told me to stop writing words and start posting images in my thread.
Plus I got no responses to my idea.
But as soon as I have a grasp of zbrush (which I just got) I'll be posting images.

10 days left, just incase anyone's bothered :(

Is it just a difficult theme or are people not interested in doing a tourny at the mo?
kinda lot of work to run it if no-one's interested right now.

Your call Mike.
I wouldn't blame you if you pulled the plug.
I do plan on diving in on this round today/tomorrow but I'm not enjoying being the only one
or just one of two or three or five.
Just as I'm sure you don't want to run a tourney with just a few participants.
Right now there's five people who have started wips.
After all it is a lot of work on your part.

You could drop this theme and try a different one and see if there's more interest and if you don't get at least ten entries then drop it. Don't know, just thinking out loud.
