Maxforums Tournament 7 - Round 2
show user profile  mrgrotey

^^^Click above to go to the main Maxforums Tournament 7 site^^^

Deadline:
3 weeks ...ish, End of play Sunday 22nd August 2010
(That's Sunday Night in your time, don't worry about time zones)

Theme: It's not How Big it is, it's What You do With it That Counts

Welcome to Round 2!

This is a round that is really open to your own interpretation.
You are to create a image that in some way delivers the idea of something really tiny. I am looking for an impressive image here. Either something like a shot from under a microscope, a macro image or similar.

You are not restricted in any way what you choose to do as long as it is made to look small.

You could choose such things as:

Bacteria/dna
Flowers
Insects/bugs/mites
Microscopic medical robot
Spy cameras
You could even think outside the box and do something though the eyes of a giant because to them most things small.
Close up of a motherboard with all the resisters and chips .etc
Clock mechanism.
'Honey I Shrunk the Kids' kind of scene.

Scoring:
Each entry will be judged individually and given points ranging from 1-10 from five different categories, these being:

Modelling
Texturing
Lighting
Atttention to Detail
and Wow Factor!

Seeing one of the scoring categories is 'Attention to Detail' then the more you put into the image the better your score will be. Really go over the top, using dust particles, Depth of Field (DOF), scratches (if applicable).etc .etc
There are various methods of doing DOF if needed, but if you are unsure of how then here is one using zdepth and photoshop lens blur:

(see bottom of thread) http://maxforums.org/threads/dof_problems/0001.aspx

Submission:
At the end of the round you are to submit an image to the limits detailed in the sections below as your final entry and it must be sent to:

mrgrotey@gmail.com

Make sure you include the words "Maxforums Tournament" followed by your username in the subject. This helps me sort through all the e-mails I get and will ensure that I don't miss your submission. I will e-mail you as soon as possible confirming your submission.

Image Limits: .jpg and no larger than 800 x 600. Both Portrait and Landscape orientation is accepted. Multiple images will be accepted. However, only one image is necessary. Do not feel that you have to do any more for the same submission as they would all be judged together as a single idea/submission.

Texturing
You may use any materials or textures. Special effects such as fur, fire, water, gas, translucency, dispersion, radiance, displacement, etc, are not only permitted, but also encouraged.

Software:
You can use any 3d program and renderer you want. Post production is allowed and encouraged.

Who can participate?:
Any registered member of Maxforums can enter the tournament at any time, regardless of how many rounds have gone by. Failure to join in the first or any other round is not a disqualification from the later rounds. However it goes without saying that entries submitted after the closure date will not be entered into the scoring.

Since Maxforums is all about promoting learning you are required to post a Work In Progress (WIP) thread for your submission/s. If you want to submit more than one piece go ahead! but there must be a WIP thread for each.
I want this tournament to be as fun as previous ones, and hopefully people can learn a thing or two from it.

Please post in the Work in Progress forum and Label your thread as follows

Maxforums Tournament 7 - Round 2 - User Name

Unfinished Work:
If the deadline is approaching and you can't get your entry done in time, Submit it anyway and just let me know it's not finished. You will still get partial points which is better than nothing. With this scoring system you need all the points you can get, so it would be in your best interest to submit whatever you've got. I may not have time to dig through the forum and scoop all the unsubmitted images this time. If I don't see it, you won't get any points.

Judges: The judges for the tournament will be:

Michael Grote - mrgrotey - www.mgrote.com
Robert McNair - bobbyboy - 3D Art Portfolio
Jesse Brophy - jbrophy - www.jessebrophy.com
Daniel Mandic - Horizon - www.dice3d.co.cc

I think that just about covers everything. If there's something I missed, or something you're not clear about, please ask right away.

Have fun, and let's see what you guys come up with.

Good luck.
