Maxforums Tournament 7 - Round 1
show user profile  mrgrotey

^^^Click above to go to the main Maxforums Tournament 7 site^^^

Deadline:
3 weeks ...ish, End of play Sunday 25th July 2010
(That's Sunday Night in your time, don't worry about time zones)

Theme: The Third Dimension.

Well seeing as this was a rather popular theme I've decided it will be the theme for the first round.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to choose an old-school game that was made using 2d sprites and update part of it to a fresh new 3D version. A sprite is basically a small flat 'pixel-art' style 2d image like the following:

You are not restricted to just the characters in the game. You can choose to recreate a character, a vehicle, a prop, a random background detail, even an entire environmemt if you wish. As long it was in an old style sprite based game you can choose it for your submission.

I realise that some of the old games have already been updated and have their own new funky 3D versions but your submission must be based on the ORIGINAL 2D sprite version and not just a duplication of the new 3D version. Please show the original sprite you are basing your submission on for judging purposes too. The more original the choice the better, the more detail the better, the more awesome the better.

Your submission does not necessarily need to be high-poly. If you want to do low-poly that's fine too, just make sure it's 3D.

Here's a short list of games to get your juices flowing, you are not limited to this list, it's just a help-out:

Donkey Kong
Super Mario Bros
Chuckie Egg
Double Dragon
Golden Axe
Street Fighter
Altered Beast
Micro Machines
Bionic Commando
Megaman
Bubble Bobble
Outrun
Afterburner
Sonic the Hedgehog
Doom
Pong
Space Invaders
Wonderboy
Lemmings
R-Type
Shinobi
Frogger
Tetris
Pacman
Castlevania
Cannon Fodder

And courtesy of Kajico, here are a couple of links to sprite databases:

Scoring:
Each entry will be judged individually and given points ranging from 1-10 from five different categories, these being:

Modelling
Texturing
Lighting
Accuracy (to original version)
and Sheer Awesomeness!.

An average will be taken from the four judges total and that will become your score for this round, each round will go towards your overall total and dictate your place in the leaderboard of the entire tournament.

Image Limits: .jpg and no larger than 800 x 600. Both Portrait and Landscape orientation is accepted. Multiple images will be accepted. However, only one image is necessary. Do not feel that you have to do any more for the same submission as they would all be judged together as a single idea/submission.

Texturing:
You may use any materials or textures. Special effects such as fur, fire, water, gas, translucency, dispersion, radiance, displacement, etc, are not only permitted, but also encouraged.

Software:
You can use any 3d program and renderer you want. Post production is allowed and encouraged.

Who can participate?:
Any registered member of Maxforums can enter the tournament at any time, regardless of how many rounds have gone by. Failure to join in the first or any other round is not a disqualification from the later rounds. However it goes without saying that entries submitted after the closure date will not be entered into the scoring.

Since Maxforums is all about promoting learning you are required to post a Work In Progress (WIP) thread for your submission/s. If you want to submit more than one piece go ahead! but there must be a WIP thread for each.
I want this tournament to be as fun as previous ones, and hopefully people can learn a thing or two from it.

Please post in the Work in Progress forum and Label your thread as follows

Maxforums Tournament 7 - Round 1 - User Name

Submission:
Entries must be sent to:

mrgrotey@gmail.com

Make sure you include the words "Maxforums Tournament" followed by your username in the subject. This helps me sort through all the e-mails I get and will ensure that I don't miss your submission. I will e-mail you as soon as possible confirming your submission.

Unfinished Work:
If the deadline is approaching and you can't get your entry done in time, Submit it anyway and just let me know it's not finished. You will still get partial points which is better than nothing. With this scoring system you need all the points you can get, so it would be in your best interest to submit whatever you've got. I may not have time to dig through the forum and scoop all the unsubmitted images this time. If I don't see it, you won't get any points.

Judges: The judges for the tournament will be:

Michael Grote - mrgrotey - www.mgrote.com
Robert McNair - bobbyboy - 3D Art Portfolio
Jesse Brophy - jbrophy - www.jessebrophy.com
Daniel Mandic - Horizon - www.dice3d.co.cc

I think that just about covers everything. If there's something I missed, or something you're not clear about, please ask right away.

Have fun, and let's see what you guys come up with.

Good luck.

Well texturing is a category for scoring so its up to you how you approach it. surely you'd not just create a box primitive and not texture it?
