Maxforums Members - What do you do?
show user profile  ScotlandDave
Thought it would be nice to start a general thread where basically Maxforums members can say who they are and what it is they do..

So basic info to start with ie a quick hello and where you are in the world..

Plus do you do 3d for a living, or hobby, or study, or view it as a potential change of career, etc..

What aspects of 3D/CGI/etc are you involved with ( ie FX / character / animation / generalist / archviz / games / etc / etc )..

Be a nice reference for others ie what people are doing and in what industries, and i suppose a good way to familiarise yourselves more with what other regular forum members are doing :)

Okay me first:

I live in Scotland, United Kingdom ( surprise ).

Have worked as a general 3d/multimedia person for a number of years freelance and for a couple of companies.. Most of it has been oil+gas related in one way or another, tend to end up doing animations of dull offshore things and somehow trying to turn it into something creative :)

Aspiration are to do more motion-graphic/aftereffects/character work etc. And also to work on more of my own ideas that are completely separate from clients and getting paid.

Mostly work in C4D with post production in Aftereffects and still do Flash authoring/coding occasionally.

Guid idea, pal :)

I'm Cecil and I'm 23, not the youngest, but still a young whippersnapper.... Was born in South Africa but lived in Scotland for most of my life. I started looking into 3D as a hobby years ago. Got fed up with my degree (Geography) and started really sinking my teeth into 3DS Max, CGI, graphics, etc about a year and a half ago. Trying desperately to turn the hobby into a career - there have been sacrafices along the way. I live in Brighton and currently work in the air simulator field, creating airports for clients (primarily flight-schools) for use in a variety of flight simulation engines. My previous project(s) include a military simulator for the french and british govs. called CENZUB, but that's about as much as I can say :).

Oh yeah, interesting fact: my first ever post on MaxForums was when I was ~18, I wanted to create a totally brand new, never seen before, MMORPG. And was looking to recruit talented 3D artists who would work for free initiailly, but hopefully expand their portfolios in the process. Lol!

I use primarily 3DS Max, TopoGun, Photoshop, zBrush, xNormal, CrazyBump and the Unreal Development Kit. I'm also looking into learning Modo, Blender and C4D.

Hi, i'm steve, about 41(ish), live in a seaside villge in south wales uk with my wife and 2 dogs.

Left school at 16 and joined a firm of architects when 8086 pc's were currently top of the range. Whilst training to be an architect i decided to take up computer graphics (only spectrum and c64 pics had been produced basically up until now) to see where it took me.

I happened to get into this market when 3ds wasn't even around, so when it was i was invited to officially beta test it, together with autocad. For me, thats where things started. Even before photoshop more or less existed mainstreem.

Been doing cgi in architecture ever since. Internals, externals, video, stills, whatevr, both in employed and freelance status all the way through.

Today, i specialise in architectural lifestyle imagery. Not much money in it, but thoroughly enjoyable.

Been moderating mf for over 10 years now, recent years been getting into Apple's shit, and love to play guitar in my free time. Also like to paint and draw and have a huge interest in aviation and architecture in general.

I use 3 powerful pc's working from home (whilst being full time employed) soley using C4D

Thats about it. As i say, my work pays my mortgage, but really really keeps me going. If i could do this shit for free i would.

Hi, I'm Nicholas Max Willem Herfst III, born in South Africa, half Dutch, lived in Holland, England, Australia and now Malaysia.

Done all types of jobs, got bored in all of them, found 3d a couple of years ago, not bored yet.

Finishing up my assessment period in the car team at Codemasters in a couple of weeks time, probably will work there full time, all 50/50 right now.

Uh, that's about it.

My name is Chris, I am 51 years old and live in the New York City area. I have been doing construction for 34 years, woodworking and furniture building also. Been doing 3d since 3d Studio release 3 for dos.
Switched to Max at version 1 on Windows NT 3.5.1, and never looked back. Short of a couple of really cool pieces of art for good friends and family members, I designed a few album covers for now deceased and or missing musicians. Most of the stuff I do now is for personal learning and fun, but I would love to someday be paid for it, maybe when I no longer have the strength to do construction.
I have a network of 14 computers, but only two or three would be considered powerful by today's standard. I have been here longer than my profile says, lost password and had to re-register.
This place rocks, and you guys are the best.

Hello my name is Daniel and I am an anonymous al...

Some of you know me, most of you don't. I registered here some 13 years ago, though my attendance has been sporadic, at best, over the last few years. I've had time not only to turn 20 while at maxforums, but half a year passed over the 30 limit as well. I've come a long way from making cubes do weird shit a decade ago to now holding a BFA in industrial design and 3/4s through my MFA in interaction design. I've moved away from using 3dsmax in any regular fashion, though still end up using it a fair bit from time to time. Most of my 3d modeling these days are not part of my education though, but rather still keeping up the hobby. I mainly use Rhino now, and produce models for 3d printing and CNC milling. Been teaching myself how to run a CNC mill with the access we have to the machines at school. Really getting into the maker movement with 3d scanning, printing and reproducing.

Right now I'm doing an internship out in San Francisco, and from here heading to Cambridge, UK, in a few months before heading back to finish my degree in northern Sweden in November.

Possibly looking at settling down in Turkey in the long run, we'll see how that pans out.

I've been here since the forum was blue, but I didn't register until just after the change. Can't remember how long ago that is now. More than 12 years, I think.

My training was in programming databases, mostly in Cobol and Pascal (dinosaur languages). I used to be a graphic designer, using mostly Max and Photoshop. Now I do project management, training in Max, Photoshop and interfacing with the programming team. I steer a department of graphic designers. All young kids with far more energy than I have. My job is mostly product development. I've been at my current employer for 19 years. Nearly half my life.

I like space stuff and steam engines. I intend on wearing socks and sandals when I'm older, and will smoke a pipe and stuff what the young kids think.

42 = the answer to the question of life the universe and everything!

Been here since the beginning as Spoon worked at my company over 15 years ago.
Been a moderator here for a long time now.

Got into 3D because i got swept away by that first amiga juggler animation (guy made of balls juggling glass balls with refraction).
Was a trance music artist/producer and decided to design my own cd covers and vinyl sleeves which was more fun.
Studied architecture in Ghent where i was the first to showcase virtual walkthroughs.
Started said company, learned shitloads and then went solo.
Learned photography to combine with gfx and animation (physical cameras light etc)

My days consist of choosing which project i'll do, learn new stuff and trying out new things.
I wish a day had 48 hours :)
