Maxforums Kiva Group

Hi folks,

I recently joined the Kiva initiative and found it a cool and easy way to help people around the globe with only a small effort.
Kiva lends a small amount of money (of your choice) to people (you can choose on the site) who want to improve their often bad situation and have an impact on their surroundings and community.

You can lend a small amount like $25 to make up a bigger sum (usually around $1000) to help buy a cow or machine to harvest crops etc and then the people pay back the $25 when they have profits.
You can then choose to relend or get your money back.

I thought it would be nice to have a Maxforums group going to see if we can make a small difference.

Would be nice to know your mf nick too so please let us know here.
I hope at least some of us will join in or maybe some are even already in there.
Cheers, Kurt

Colleague of mine demo'd his app he made for the kiva initiative for Windows Phone 7, and it really got my attention then. Kind of slipped away since then. Good reminder Kurt, going to look into this again.

here's another interesting initiative.

Jokes apart, I've joined mf team. Strangely, after my first symbolic donation, the team's impact is still on 0. Howcome?

Cheers,

Manolo

Cheers Hiostu, i found it through istockphoto, large team there and i really like the idea of helping out and getting your funds back if you want. This had MF group written all over it.

Nice one Manolo!
System takes a few hours to do the math, i see it has been updated.
Thanks for joining us !

Hey Vlad, welcome to the group!

I remember when the idea was founded back in 2005 i had my doubts and didn't really look into it.
Now, more than 7 years later they loaned $253m to people who want to undertake something to improve their situation in the long term.
What was most important to me is that they state a 99% repayment rate so chances you lose your money are very small.

You can check out their numbers herehttp://www.kiva.org/about

i m not sceptic about loosing my money, i dont have to much to loose anyway :D

i just hope they land where they are suposed too

i remembered a bit from the documentary film "Home".. they say somewhere in a third world country "some 1 thought of the unthinkable and founded a bank that lends only to the poor".. i must say that that bit of the documentary, depicting good things taking place around the world, pulled a tear :)

i m glad that good people are starting to take a stand, im just sad i m not a better one

Indeed, i'm no filantropist and it took me years of figuring out how to make a difference.
I also don't discuss world problems because i think we are all bacteria who will eventually eat this planet, eachother and maybe even the moon.. and then die, no big deal.
I just see people here and there who actually make a difference and just make things better for everyone.

I don't believe in giving with the other side just 'taking', there must be an effort on both sides.
