| Max using TONS of my RAM... why? |
PixelPusher40 |
Wanted to know if anyone else has this problem, my co-workers run Max with roughly 75 to 100K 'Mem Usage' according to Windows Task Mgr. My scene typically runs up around 600K or higher!
Just opening Max with nothing in it my 2 other artists are about 20K... my Max, however, opened up with nothing in it starts at 300K and goes up from there!
I've checked settings, all look same, even the same video card (Quadro FX 4800). The only difference is I'm running 64 bit XP with 8 gigs of RAM.
I'm trying to avoid re-imaging my rig down to 32bit because that's the last resort. Anyone seen this or have ideas on where I can look to see why Max is using so much memory?
Thanks for any help.

and it's simply annoying you or does it create actual problems ?

My max loads up at 211k just after start, nothing in the scene. Never thought about it, but it have never been a problem either =) (even though I'm only at 4gb ddr3)

Max is using more RAM because it has access to more, this is a good thing. My advice to you based on your post is to close task manager and carry on as normal.

Sorry, forgot to add this important little gem: i crash often. had a bluescreen of death yesterday. I'm also using a memory hog: Cryengine3.... but my rig is powerful enough, it SHOULD handle both.
Yea, it's more than annoying... it's affecting my work. :(
@horizon: K is for thousand bytes... (1 mb)... sorry, bad habit. @BishBash: that makes sense, but like i said my co-worker who has a 4gb machine idles Max at a nice 20mb... So you're telling me that because I have 8gb of Ram Max needs 350mb's!? Jeesh!
This sounds like it's time to re-image my machine and go back to 32 bit. Thanks for all your help anyways guys. :)

Its kind of a given that we all use the same MAX. So therefore your machine, drivers, other software,..OS install.....etc. is where the problem lies. Going back to 32-bit MAX isnt really the answer.

Let me restate: from what I've heard (others running Max using 150mb+) it's not totally uncommon for Max to 'start up' using 350mb... then the problem lies elsewhere as Dr. Jim stated.
at least I can comfortably rule out Max being the problem. But, I still think 750mb in Task Manager is rather large for a simple low-poly character. This does not, however, indicate a Max problem necessarily... something else could be pushing it that high.
Unfortunately, I'm back where I started and have no idea what it is... which is why I'll re-image or get a new machine.
Thanks again for your advice.

lol, you're actually consider getting a new machine based on max consuming a bit more RAM ? I'd say go for it, I heard those new 8-cores have optimal memory handling.

better question yet...
have you tried opening up the same scene on your coworkers machines?

@killerbee2: you might have missed my earlier statement, I mentioned my system crashes very often. Our company has a contract with Dell, it's easy to swap machines if we're not satisfied. Heck, if Max didn't crash all the time I would'nt care if used 3 times as much RAM, as long as it worked.
This is looking like a problem with my OS, and I've learned that Crytek has it's share of bugs... might not be Max. Since not to many of you are blown away about the fact that Max is using 700mb or RAM, then i'll rule out Max being the problem.
Thanks for all your help guys, I really appreciate it.
