Max to Octane problems.
show user profile  Westcoast13
I've posted on the Octane render forum but that was friday evening and they still haven't moderated and posted the question. That, or it was such a stupid question they deemed it spam! :/

I know a couple of guys here use Octane so i thought i'd give it a go here!

I export an OBJ, import to Octane and the mtl file appears to be ignored. I have a feeling it's down to materials in Max. All mats have to be standard - right?

If so, is there a (ideally free!!) script that converts mental ray (A&D + Pro mats) to standard materials so i can give it a go like that?

There are a bunch of material conversion scripts at Scriptspot. Did you try any of them?

Facepalm. Thanks Nik.

I won't even start to make excuses for my stupidity.

Ha ha, no worries. If you find one that works well, let me know. There are a few of them and I'm guessing that they don't all work perfectly.

Wow, there are a lot of scripts there! :/

No joy as such but google did direct me to the following which seems to have converted A&D Mats to Standard ones, of sorts at least. It might be enough i guess, i'll give it a go when i get chance and see what happens! I generally work with A&D mats so i am hoping that will do a job.

fn convertArchToStandard mat =
(
-- Make new Standard mat, with original's diffuse map
newMat = Standard diffuseMap:mat.mapM0
newMat.name = mat.name
newMat.diffuse = mat.diff_color
showTextureMap newMat on
newMat.specularLevel = 30
newMat.glossiness = 20
return newMat
)

-- Loop through all objects, checking material on each
for obj in geometry do
(
mat = obj.material

if (mat != undefined) then
(
if (classof mat == Multimaterial) then
(
-- This is a multi-sub material, so loop through all submaterials
for i in mat.materialIdList do
(
submat = mat[i]
if (classof submat == Arch___Design__mi) then
(
mat[i] = convertArchToStandard submat
)
)
)

else if (classof mat == Arch___Design__mi) then
(
-- Regular, non-multi material
obj.material = convertArchToStandard mat
)
)
)

Another Octane question, thought i'd keep it in this thread..

Anyone know how big the online material database is? You can't access it with the demo version so i have no idea if there are 5 useless materials or 5000 fantastic ones there!

that's a start - if all you want is a default std mtl with the diffuse map from the arch design mtl.

got some work there filling in the blanks for the rest of it :)

I didn't write it! I have no scripting experience whatsoever! To be honest, no interest in learning it or time to do so either.

Really, if i can distinguish between mats in Octane (and it's also a nice touch that diffuse maps are included), its not a real consequence how much other info is ported across.

The question about the Octane material library still stands though!

Well for anyone who might be interested and in the spirit of the community, I have an update on my question after speaking with a friend earlier..

The octane live materials database is a good starting point but not a massive materials repository.

The Octane materials library online isn't huge. There's some nice ones categorized by surface material, but most of them aren't all that extensive. The good news is that I hear Otoy is working on a comprehensive material library for the near future. Also, the materials that are available are very useful as a starting base to customize or tweak into your own materials, then save them. So you could keep your own personal material library on your hard drive to turn to as well. They probably have 100 or so materials in different categories in their online database already, so plenty there to get a starting point for customization.

That's pretty much the same as I was told, cheers.

Well I've decided I'll be buying a copy anyway, pretty impressed with the demo. There are a few things I can't figure out, for example sometimes I seem to get several objects grouped with the same material even if they didn't have the same ones in max but I'm sure with more practise I will figure it out!

just a pointer, it's worthwile buying the maxplugin, no conversions etc needed, all happening inside max...

The problem with objects having the same grouping and material isn't Octane. It's the OBJ converter convention. You really need to be careful about how you name your materials inside of max, and have different materiall ID's, etc for subobjects, and make sure if you don't have maps exporting, that your materials are all named differently for each object, and even more, that all your OBJECTS are named uniquely as well, in case they don't have specific materials. Any instances will share the same materials when exported, even if you thought you named them differently, so make sure you double check before exporting.

Thanks for the tips guys.

Probably using octane to render models created in blender so I will tryout that export plugin. As I said I'm sure it's me not octane! :)
