Max, Shapeways and Scale....
show user profile  Kajico
Anybody have experience exporting objects from Max to get printed at Shapeways?

I keep having the hardest time exporting it and converting it so it's in the right scale.

I ended up exporting to Lightwave, scaling it to the right size and saving it out as Collada. I can't figure out any proper way to export objects in their right scale through Max.

Does this have anything to do with your system units setup?

Nope.

I was working in centimeters, in max my mesh was to exact scale, but when I exported it out as wf object, or collada object it would not retain the scale. Every other application would read it a much much larger size than what it was, on top of that it wasn't anywhere near the measurements I had in max. For instance, my model was 1.5cm h, by .75cm w, by .9cm l in max, when exported every other program (softimage/lightwave) read it as 47 cm high. The program that shapeways recommends to use to rescale was also showing this larger size.

Had you scaled it in Max to begin with? I deal with a fair amount of exporting from max and if there's one thing I've learnt, it's that if you change the scale, or move/rotate the pivot of an object... you'll need to Reset XForm and collapse before export, otherwise that information isn't "baked" to the object, and Max will forget it.

I had reset xform and collapsed before exporting.

Sorry, my mind reading abilities seem a little weak tonight :)
