Max or Blender

Hey guys,

Have recently got into 3d moddelling but have been having some problems getting started. I was wondering what are the best programs to use?. Have been modelling in sketch up and bringing them into max8 for lights and rendering with unsatisfactory results.

Have downloaded Blender as well but am unfamiliar with its user interface. Is this program any good for rendering and architectural visualisations. what are yer views?

Should the models be built in autocad 3d?, which is far more time consuming than sketch up and then rendered in Max?Is this the most common/accurate method used?

I'd be really interested in hearing peoples methods for creating architectural renders and the combinations of programs and the associated problems they involve!
what are the best file formats to use? .3ds,.obj,.fbx,.dae...?

please excuse my ignorance.

much appreciated, 4arc

It all comes down to how much money you want to spend. Max costs several thousand dollars, Blender is free.

Blender is capable of Arch Vis, and it is compatible with several physical renderers. And it looks possible to import Sketchup models. But if money is no object, Max is a more professional, easier to use product.
