Max in linux...
show user profile  Shugs81
Hi peeps...

Currently studying 3DS Max as part of a correspondance course and was wondering what the latest version of max is that I could run on ubuntu 12.04... tried 2013 and it did the .net 4 thing so I know I cant use that... trying to save some time and move away from winblows and thought I'd ask on here...

I have the 2010 education suite but was hoping to try to get one of the newer versions up and running. been using 2013 and quite like some bits but other bits are just odd...

either way if no one can give me an answer i'll just try 2010 again... shame if i have to as I've pretty much converted all my stuff to the new versions which i only just realised while typing... balls!

anyhow...

thanks for any help in advance!

AS got max 2009 running through wine the other day, Id try that.

"trying to save some time and move away from windows" not sure if these two concepts work well in the same sentence but anywhoo, not starting a debate about that.

Face palms this thread in advance...

As far as I know there's no way to run max on linux. It's made for windows architecture. Use export files for old max versions.

no he didn't. he looked on the wine compatibility list & noticed someone else did.

I haven't had any luck so far.

lol... I think it was a previous posts from Advanced Software that prompted me to ask!

The reason it was to save time is the only reason I still use windows regularly is for my scanner and max, and I saw that someone had got it running and was just wondering which was the latest version... I'll try 2010 again to see what errors it puts up...

just I've got a 120gb ssd split 70gb windows and the rest for linux and max 2013 will only let me install on c drive!!! i've only got 6gb free... not that I have anything on there!!! still not sure where all the space is cause my docs in on a separate drive, all temp stuff is on a separate drive and temp internet stuff is also on a different drive... not even started looking at cs5 yet!!!

I would have used maya but my course is based around max... I've been using blender for a while but know I'll probs not be able to get a job using it... also you can't get the trials of maya which is a pain! anyhoooo... will sort something out! hopefully cause i need to get on with finishing stuff!! :D

c4d runs on linux.

getting max running there is a pain in the ass and likely not worth the effort unless autodesk addresses outstanding compatibility issues - firstly either a rework of the copy protection or bootsector emulation in wine to enable it to function. requires input from wine developers and/or autodesk. don't hold your breath. likely not a priority for either. just run it on windoze.

meh... that means I've got to find as much stuff to remove as possible and work out what i need and what i don't...

no bother... will have a quick fiddle with 2010 tonight as I've got the disk there but if i can't run it i'll just stick with windows...

shame... but i need to get me head down... if i reinstall 2010 will i be able to convert 2013 files back? there's nothing massivly modifier heavy... if at all come to think of it... infact... just ignore me... I'm talking crap! lol!
