Max 2011: The word on the street..

I'm not sure, but I think that was a complement. I'll take it. Thanks, Marko !

To clarify, when I say the core doesn't need a rewrite, that doesn't mean it couldn't be improved.

I have no access to the core source code (only plugins), so it could be a terrible mess that is difficult to extend. If this is the case it should be refactored incrementally. The basic structure / hierarchy is fine.

I don't make 3dsmax strategic decisions, so I have no way of knowing if any of the above will be acted upon.

Max has been made of bits of other people's code since day one with the old IPX plugins. It's not really a problem, as I see it. I actually think Max is now the best it's ever been. I don't use it "heavily", but I do use it a lot.

I look forward to improvements, but all I would add at the moment is hardware rendering, to speed it up.

Oh, and expose the rayhosts file to Maxscript reloading, which I will bleat on about until they do it.

Nik, if the rayhosts file can be reloaded from the SDK (no idea - haven't investigated), that could be hooked through into maxscript.

Code does need factoring & streamlining to keep it maintainable as the code base is extended. I don't know how much time the developers are allocated to achieve this. If it's like anywhere else, I would image they have less time allocated to this than they'd like.

Hey AS. If you ever do find a way, I'd be pleased! It's a shame it can't just be scripted. The user can reload it, but they never thought to have it scriptable. If MR had been in max from the start, it would probably be possible, but it was plugged into max at a late date.

Remind me once Infinity has launched & I'll take a look.

As this is a MR issue, run it past mental images support (if you haven't already done so).

Thanks. It's an Autodesk issue though. Max reads the rayhosts file to choose machines to use for the distributed rendering. It's Max that writes the file. It's the file that is changes when you alter the distributed rendering choices.

Thanks though.

What I like to see is a huge update on texturing.

What if we could texture by dropping images on the model, then moving them, using pen tools, erase tools, looping tools (for example in a "cut spline" way draw a line over your model that the texture should be placed on in a repeating way, then select the beginning and it loops from there.)

That kind of stuff. I hate unwrapping and then drawing and updating and losing UVW coordinates and getting it all right... it just looks like we're doing 1999 stuff. If you see how much easier modeling became... why can't texturing not become more simple?

At a current point I like the interface. When you get the hang out of it, it works. I like it way more than other applications. I tried Cinema4D and the good looking icons and such just didn't do it for me... dunno why. I like max with it's windows 3.1 look sorta speak.

But guess I'm quite alone on this haha. :P

I really like the general Max interface, but there are some very cool things in other programmes that I'd like to have.

- the marking menus in Maya and the equivalent in C4D (of which I couldn't find a picture)

- the nodes in Softimage
- faces getting slightly highlighted when you hover over them in C4D, so you know what you're selecting

That said, I love the modifier workflow in Max and found myself struggling to get my head around the way other programmes handle this (especially in C4D, where you apply objects to modifiers apparently, wtf?!)

If Autodesk do what they say they are doing with max I will be very happy.

I enjoy using max but I do have a few quibbles, like I do with most of the software I use. These days Photoshop pisses me off way more than max (it used to be the other way round), so I'd say thats score 1 for Autodesk.

However my main gripes with max that I would like to see fixed are:

2010 takes longer to load, this needs to be reduced.

Extra clicks needed to merge and export files = annoying.

Scene select dialog while faster that 2009 is still slow and has a horrible cluttered UI.

That's all I can think of at the moment, I hope they deliver - I'm very excited by some of their proposals.

I know by first hand that Adsk is listening. We had a meeting with a software designer that came from Montreal a couple months ago, to know our opinions and wishlists for MAX, theyare listening to studios from small to huge, so be sure of sending the crash reports as detailed as posible, MAX is more stable than ever, at least v2009 has been very stable on our pipeline, I guess they are making some interesting changes. OF COURSE we'd like to have an application that has the best of all the other 3d apps that compete with MAX... I suppose AS can talk more about this but from my point of view every software has it's own problems, I'm not expert in XSI, MAYA, C4D, Lightwave or else, but i think sometimes we are biased to see that the grass is only green on the other side...

firefox takes 60 seconds to load on my machine.
Max 2010 takes 45 seconds.
Firefox is a web browser! So which one has a loading time issue?

@ Joey : You broke the interwebs. That's why your Firefox takes so long to start. Uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox should fix the problem.
