just watched the compositing thing, looks like as what we would expect from autodesk, a lightversion of toxik given away for free. C'mon this could be integrated so much more intelligently.
Whole max is looking like a patchwork of tools knitted together with ducktape.
When will there finally be tools actually working together inside max ? I expect cloth to be interactive with soft & hardbody dynamics, smoke, particles, liquid, fur, ragdolls and alike.

Ooooow I love this!! :D *jumping up and down* :D :D
Where does the name "Slate" come from? Why do they call it that, the node material editor? Is this a plug-in they bought and integrated, just like PolyBoost became the Graphite Modelling Tools?
EDIT Oh, yeah. It looks exactly like NodeJoe

Well, much of max was developed by other people and licensed. I wouldn't be surprised. It's amazing how much has been tacked on over the years. I'm surprised it's as stable as it is.

i am very impressed with these new features. i am sure these will make my job a bit easier. this is much better release than 3D Max 2010. This release has great potential.

some solutions seem quite dodgy (but we're used to it) like the paintfx thing, further ribbon nonsense but i must admit they are trying.
i still want better hair, fluids, a new core, optimized code, flawless mental ray integration, loads of bugfixes
untill that day all needles remain in those little autodesk people ^^

They are asshats.
We are on a subscription, a dozen seats, network license. They still haven't sent us a key. FFS, for the barrel of money we give them every year....
Oh, and lots of people are reporting that MR is broken in this release and is producing odd artefacts and speckles. Expect an SP soon, I suppose.
And, no iRay... Damn!

Really honestly can`t believe people get soooo excited about the pile of crap that max is rapidly becoming. Big massive wow for the new ui elements and patched-together ideas from other software - haven`t seen anything of substance enough from max to justify the cost since version 8 - just marketability aides.
Don`t like to be a spoil-sport but what god-awful bollocks people are spilling they`re wallets for.

I think it's biggest problem is that it's just too damned expensive compared to the competition. XSI is like half the price? And modo a quarter?
I'm digging some of the UI and modelling updates but it's not enough to justify staying with such an overpriced package when it's seemingly spending most of its dev cycle now playing catch up with the competition.

The only things of value to me are the improvements to Mental Ray, and the Graphite modelling tools.
Both of these are much better than any previous releases.
The rest is a bunch of arse.

Being in college has it's benefits. We get to download this software for free with a 6/13 month license. However, I have no idea what I'm going to do after I graduate. I don't want to dish out the money it costs to buy this product as something I do for a hobby.

some of the features in the latest release are quite revolutionary over previous releases. Most previous releases have just been a couple of new tweaks and additions but this at least seems to be jumping forward with customizing interface etc, houdini has it down pat for customizing interface I've been using Zeno over at ILM and that is great because you can pretty much make the interface anything you like, floating windows, splitting windows up and adding whatever you like. I'd love that to happen in max and maya, but I don't see it ever actually happening unfortunately.
I like the additions they've made for this year! Great stuff!
