Max 2009 Dust particles?
show user profile  anthonyderham
I have modelled an old factory, and want there to be dust floating in the air, reacting with volume lights and character motion. Anyone have any ideas on how to do this? I cannot use plugins unless they are free :P

put some volume light in there with noise on as a starter.
Then pflow some small particles (and lots of them, like millions) hanging in the air.
Then attach windspace modifiers to vital parts of your character with faloff strength and a add a drag modifier to your scene so the particles don't continously move after they've been pushed.

Easier way would be use fumefx to simulate the general movements in your scene and use the fumefx node in pflow to drive the particles. But that doesnt come free.
