Max2009 splinemapping: silly feature ?
show user profile  soontekk
Hi peeps,

At first i was happy max2009 had new unwrapping features such as splinemapping.
After using it though i realized how silly it is since you can easily unwrap a tube or hoselike object with a simple unwrap.

To demonstrate this i remodeled the hose from the max2009 feature video and unwrapped it in 3 seconds.

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

This thing is featured as one of the main new features in 2009.
Someone tell me i'm wrong and this thing is the brilliant new thing in max.

If you look at the other features like mR pro materials, these were just dropped in max to be compatible with revit .... everyone complains max is a shoebox with loads of loose ends in it, nobody seems to mind or give a flying ***k..
What do you think, speak up...

Cheers

This is a brilliant new thing in max... how do you easily unwrap a hoselike object in unwrap? I find unwraping such a thing a royal pain in the ass personaly.

Once I try max 2009, I plan to be using this feature to pre-unwrap everything, from hoses to arms, and use unwrap for finer tweaks.

is there something I don't know about it that makes it suck?

nice for rendered splines - but for more complex things too?

Lol, i just did it, look at the image!
I made a renderable spline, turned it to poly + noise
Then point-to-point seamed in unwrap and wvoila, done.

The spline thing in max2009 is also an unwrap tool next to pelt and u have to draw a spline first to get it to work. I see no advantage whasoever there..

The viewcubes take up loads of space and the steeringwheel is just silly, i disabled that right away.
Then i discovered they 'forgot' to install backburner with max2009 after which i promptly UNINSTALLED the damn thing.
This is the first time i skip a max release, coming from me i know it must mean something :]

Regards,
Kurt

Well, my question is... what the heck is it supposed to do in the first place?

you mong, of course it's easy to unwrap a renderable spline - It comes with perfect UV's in the first place.

It's for long objects that DON'T have UV's or uniform tessilation.

Heres an example:
http://motionographer.com/2008/04/09/oktobers-jonny-kofoed/

For the "Birthdays" text in this spot, I polymodelled it and so didn't have any UV's I ended up writing a script to generate them but the new Spline UV would have been ideal.

(I also wrote a script that allowed me to write on the text as well.)

Dub, thats a nice spot right there

However (:) i can't see the advantage of the spline unwrap.
I did not use the renderable spline's UV's i remade them with unwrap myself.
I would have no problem mapping your birthday text at all, 1 seam point-to-point and done
Even so with my technique i can counter irregularities in the mesh (like an extra branch or bulge) which the spline unwrap can not..

So i remain a mong (what is a mong ? and do i have to dress differently now ?) and persist this new uberfeature is a scam to make us think they actually updated max !

Cheers

soontekk, how do you do this crazy "1 seam point-to-point and done" magic? is it an option in unwrap?

[edit] n/m... your using pelt, thats a pain in the but on its own, ill take the quick and easy spline mapping any day.

I think the difference is had you polymodeled that tube thingy your UVs wouldn't be so easy to unwrap using any coordinates other than spline.
