Max2009 -- is it Better or Market Ploy??
show user profile  Speedy
I just tried demo version of 2009 and yet I didn't see any new features or improvement on Max 2009 compared to 2008. So what do you guys think?

Bleh.. nothing to be excited about. The MR improvements are pretty good, and the new render view is pretty cool, but the new viewport nav stuff was a waste of time and resources. Still exploring some of the new features, but I'm not really impressed.

The "Select" window ( H ), what a mess, I liked the old way. Why did they change it, they could have just added this new method seperately.

Has anyone else watched the sample videos for max 2009??
http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/item?siteID=123112&id=11007364

I remember a series of video tuts autodesk put out for max 8 for subscription members and this guy did the narration.. OHHH my gosh I can't stand listening to this guy.. Sounds like he's friggin' plugging his nose. What happened to the nerd that used to do these?..

I dunno what that guy sounds like (haven't listened)... BUT, I find myself falling asleep whenever I listen to an american doing a video tutorial. Seriously... I dunno what it is, just makes me want zZzZzZz. I don't mean that in an offensive way, i'm not "bored" by the tutorials or anything... it's just... I can't explain it.

Edit
Just listened to one of those videos. It is pretty horrid, surely Autodesk can find someone with better... vocals?

It's the american nerd culture.. Boring as hell to listen to - eloquence just doesn't couple well with max jargon. I like tutorials that have the narrative added after it's recorded.. If it's recorded during the process there's too much "Umm. and now.. we're going to.. - wait.. why'd it do that.. OH. Now we'll go to render.... *click.* aaaand render elements.. aaand... click on add...."

I think autodesk thinks they're being more exotic with having someone with an accent (well - to me it's an accent). The last nerd that did the narrative was pretty fast paced and I could follow what he was up to, man this guy loses me so fast.

Video tutorials should always be done with a sexy female voice narrating. IMO.

I'm still waiting for the wizard like in word to popup on my screen...

Maybe someone with some coding skillz could make a wizard ?
Like some kind of wizard frog and all he has to do is jump on the bottom of the screen every 5 seconds and say *fronat*

Wizard:"I see you are trying to make a fronat. Want some help with that?"
Wizard:"What would you like to do?"
-Make fronat with make fronat button.
-Go online and ask people how to make a fronat.

I managed to play with the demo yesterday. First impressions...

1) Viewport navigation tools. Not really my cup of tea, I find them distracting. Disabled them.
2) Composite and Color Correction maps. Finally !!!
3) Photometric lights. Didn't have much time to play with them yet, but looks promising.
4) Still no material lights... Bummer !

Why do they keep updating Max every five seconds?? Was it always like this? I feel alienated because im on Max 8 ffs..

I seriously hope Max isn`t turning into My First 3d from Tomy or sidelined from Maya - is it?

Annual updates seem to be the way many software companies are heading. Notice the word "updates" even though they mark them as versions, most of them are just updates. This 2009 version came early...

I believe they moved it earlier, to match with other autodesk products
