Matte Problems
show user profile  Coxy
Hey guys, here is what I am trying to do. I have my building that I need to superimpose onto the top of video footage. I just want the building and its shadow to be on the footage. My idea was to place it on a plane, use the background switcher with an MRSky in the reflections slot, use the MrSun for direct lightly and then have a plain white colour in the background, then apply a matte to a plane beneath the building so that it becomes white too and then all I need to do is multiply out the white, but keep the shadow detail of the building.

The issue is, this doesn't seem to be working, either my plane renders out black, 3DS Max crashes, or the plane is slightly off colour. Is there another way to do this, or am I just missing something with the way I am doing it? I have been testing this for about two hours now and I just can't seem to work out what is going wrong.

Use the shadow/matte material on the ground plane?

That is what I am doing. I have applied it to the ground plane, but it keeps rendering out black, or off colour with the background.

Can you post up the max file for us to look at?

Hey grotey, sorry for not responding. Have been crazily rendering for the last week. By the time you posted this I already had to find a work around and was busy rendering. In the end I just used an alpha channel and a plain white plane that they could multiply over their footage to get the result I needed. Thanks for offering your time though.
