Materials Blown out.

I was fooling with my render settings to do Volume lighting and somehow, now all my materials are blown out as if self-illumination is turned on (it's not.).

What setting did I screw up to create this global illumination issue?

Never mind...Global Ambient was set to white.

id say its closely related to teaching someone what you know. By the time you formulate the words and make it simple for someone else to understand - you understand it more yourself.

Okay, here is one that I cannot figure out.

The ceiling on this room is a separate object but it is touching or maybe even overlapping (I've tried it both ways).

Somehow the light from outside is lighting the underside of this ceiling. I know there is something that I am not understanding about how the renderer calculated shadows but what is the work around.

I'm using scanline but the problems happens with mental ray too. Don't want to use mental ray for this since I think I can eventually make it pretty photo-realistic with a lot shorter render time.

What am I not getting?

If the ceiling is just a plane give it some thickness like a box.
I can't explain why it works but it does.
I only run into this problem using vray sun and sky.*

*I bet it's the same issue with mray and spamline.

Either as JPjr. says or some normals on your ceiling poly are reversed.

It was an extruded spline.

All I had to do was extrude a little more.

Weird.
