Materials applying to everything at once?
show user profile  becolt
Yeah, I'm completely new to it, but here's the thing: I'm following the first modeling tutorial that came with the program ( I noticed it contains errors) but I've built this building in three parts, metal frame/glass/mullions and I've got three different materials I want to use, but each time I select a different layer and apply a new material to it, the other layers change to that material too. I have a feeling there's a setting I'm missing somewhere. Any help would be wonderful and would stop me from freaking out completely and running down the road naked :)

You have to select everything in the layer, not just select the layer.

"Everything in the layer": Do you mean I have to select each polygon? Yikes. what I was doing... well I tried three ways
1 - press M, then H, select one layer>ok. Select material>assign material to selection
2 - Drag material onto appropriate layer
3 - Click layer, select material, assign
I'll go try selecting ind. polygons and cry into my beer now

what the hell do you mean by layer?

You can't click on an individual object and highlight it and then drag and drop the material on it?

Are you sure they are separate objects?

(\/) (°,,,°) (\/) Woop woop woop!

Hehe... yeh maybe explain more, I assumed that you had a bunch of objects in different layers but it seems that's not what you mean.
A screenshot is always good, in this case show where you are selecting a 'layer'.

This is after I applied the brass to the outer shell, shell is selected:

Yeah, I was calling objects "layers," too much time working in photoshop I suspect.
I wonder if I'm selecting things improperly somehow? It doesn't say multiple objects selected on the right sidebar.

Sounds like you either have an Instanced/Referenced object, or an Instanced/Referenced material.

To check if its the object, check this button is clickable under the modifier stack in the modify panel (this button is immediately under where you see the +editable poly, +twist .etc modifiers on top of each other) If its clickable, click it, this will make the object independent of the other one and wont be affected by it.

To check if its the material, there is the same button as above in the material editor but I can see that its not lit fom your image so I don't think its that. It could be that the two materials applied to the building parts have the same name. Keep clicking this button until it greys out (do this on both materials) and check that the materials' names are different.

:O I've always wanted a button to do that.

That was Strange! (but you were right of course). on the glass, the button was staring me in the face--on the outside shell it was somehow under the "ffd" modifier, and on the mullions it was under the shell modifier. Would this happen due to what stage in the original objects creation it was cloned?

Thank you so much.

Now to remedy the next problem: gotta load max onto my laptop b/c I'm using a 6 or 7 yr old Radeon and can't see lights or shading. Anybody got a video card they want to part with? I'll wash your dishes for a month. : )

Edit: Goddamnit. laptop is only 2 yrs old and uses shader 1.0 and therefore can't run an effin thing on it. Amazing how being broke has a knack for keeping people broke
