If I import a model into MAX, any materials I had assigned are now overwritten, but still known to MAX somehow
What happens to the original material and how can I access materials that MAX must know about, because it is showing them, but doesn't give you the option of editing?

In the material editor click the pipette and hit the model in question, it's material will appear in the selected slot.

wow. I never knew that. I've been doing the "get material-choose browse from selected-drag it into the mat editor" for over ten years. :)
