Maxunderground news unavailable

Material Map paths.......fek!
show user profile  Dr_Jim I got a 3DS file who's materials reference a ton of maps.
I got sent a big ass ZIP file of texture maps....which break down into a million subfolders.

The 3DS file does NOT link properly to the folder map structure at all.

I need a way to set 'paths' to the TOP level folder and then let MAX search all the sub & sub & sub folders to properly link these damn maps!
Any thoughts?

oh crap.

I get it now.

it IS searching the directories is NOT linking because 3DS ONLY allows for a 8.3 naming convention and these maps have normal,longer names!

Relink Bitmap should save you. Copy the textures in a folder a repoint everything to it. Relink. Done.

Yes....I have traveled back in time.

Yes I mean a .3DS file. Ya know .3DS is used by many programs as an optional export OBJ and DXF and crap.

Heres the problem.

I got a folder of textures with LONG filenames. And the 3DS file format TRUNCATES all map names to 8.3 format. So the actual 3DS doesnt contain the full name of the texture, so there is no way it will re-link.
I will have to find them in the folders and go in and replace the truncated/incomplete map names in the 3DS file by hand.

AND....I gotta say

Steve Williams of Advance Software fame and 3D web visionary came up with a simple yet great idea to fix this!
Simply run a batch converter and truncate all the texture names in the folder to 8.3 This will then cause them to line up with the truncated names in the 3DS file!

Make sure you don't get duplicated names after truncation, though.
