| Material library forgets bitmap locations |
Jtickett@gmail.com |
Hello, I'm working on 3ds max 2010, and I'm trying to save materials into a library, to use regularly in future. The problem seems to be that once the .mat is loaded once again into the material browser, the diffuse bitmap that makes the wood texture is missing. All the other material settings are there but we're having to relocate these bitmaps manually every time which is too much hassle.
Does anyone know if theres a trick to this?
I've tried adding the bitmaps to the C:/3dsmax/maps folder and adding the original bitmap folder location in "External Files". The jpegs are 4.2mb, 300dpi, 5400 x 1600 pixels. I dont think this should be passing any limitations?
thanks in advance, any advice you can offer would be much appreciated!

Do your map file names have any strange characters or are they particularly long names?

Not particularly for either of those. The filename is "Poll_Wood_01.jpg" The map works fine in the scene, and when the scene is reloaded the file texture locations stay, its just the .mat file that seems to have the issue.
My other concern was that it was stored on a network drive (and it was a long address as in folders inside folders) so I copied the maps into: C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max 2010\maps Open the .mat, copied mats into the editor, reloaded the files from that location and put back into library, resaved the .mat but this didnt work either.

I don't know a solution, but another thing you could try is making the user paths absolute instead of relative. What displays in the box which normally displays the bitmap path, once a material has lost its bitmap?

The box under 'Maps' for diffuse still shows "Map #7 (JPEG File)". inside that, in the box/button that should show bitmap location, it just displays "JPEG File" and when clicked it starts exploring the last opened folder.
Hmm I went to Customise > Configure User Paths > External Files and made sure all those were absolute paths.

apparently this was a bug with the first release of 2010, an update (service pack 1 and a hotfix) fixed this.

I bet you're glad that one's fixed - could have meant a lot of re-working of scene files!
