material editor 2011
show user profile  Boing
I need some help, i have a couple of what are probably fairly idiotic questions.

1) I'm in default mode (not slate), i want to find a material on an existing scene object so i hit "get material" but where the original dialogue box had a heading for "selected" i can find nothing. The help files state the following.

"On the Compact Material Editor toolbar, click (Get Material).
A modeless Material/Map Browser is displayed.

In the Browse From group box at the upper left, make sure that either Selected or Scene is chosen. The Selected option lists only materials in the current selection."

but all i'm getting is this.

no mention of 'group boxes' and nowhere to find "selected" headings like 2010.

Help?

2) how in the name of holy fuck almighty do i activate slate? can i only do it on new files, not existing scenes? i can't find a damn thing anywhere to change over from default.

1) it's in the "scene materials" rollout.

2) Mode / Slate at the top.

Don't worry, the mated has changed quite a bit. Frustration is normal.

I love Slate. I hope others are enjoying it as much.

right, sorry to be a tool about this, i'm sure it really is obvious but all i get under 'scene' is a list of all the materials in my scene (some with a red tab on the right corner.....?) but no "selected material" button.

also Nik when you say mode/slate at top, what are you referring to? top of the main Max window or top of the material editor?

"modes", at the top left of the material editor.

When a material is selected, it gets a white box around it in the scene materials rollout.

you're kidding me!? so if i have 100 materials in a scene i have to scroll through them all to find the one i have selected?

Have Autodesk suffered some kind of collective head injury since 2010? how the hell is that an improvement?

Also, i still can't find a 'modes' button anywhere on my material editor?

That looks like the old material editor to me, not the 2011 one! It should look like this:

Check this link for the "get from selected" problem.

I just use Slate now. It's much easier than the compact editor, and can do the same stuff and more.

help files say there should be a flyout on the material editor button but there isn't.

Your interface looks odd. Have you loaded an old interface up?

hmmmm, yeah i think i loaded my old 2010 menus. shit, i thought it would have simply assigned the relevant functions to the old buttons. How do i reset them, i've never had to do that?

I think that's messed your interface up! Can you try loading the default UI and seeing if the slate option appear?
