Your lighting setup kinda reminds me of this

the lace around the bottom edge appears to invert due to the light 'shadows' being lighter than the object.

Also the flare on the rings is a bit ...well ...horrible.

the light shadow is the reflection of the cushion as floor is glossy :) and yes i also agree on the glare on the ring so will remove that :)

It still doesn't work because the 'reflection' (which I'm not convinced it is) is of the underside which seems to be a lot lighter than the top, this cannot happen. Unless its a glass surface and lit from below in which case the reflection wouldn't be as visible.

Looks like a light cache bleed issue. I could be wrong though.

strange though as im only using 4 lights and on low values, 2 vray lights each side of studio 1 vray light above the cushion and 1 dome light with hdri map for lighting the ring only.

Yup, whichever way you're doing it, it's wrong.

Could be a material problem possibly. Are you using Vray materials for everything?

vray for materials, the lace around the edge is a black and white pattern inserted into refraction for transparency and the main cushion material is just a bump map in the bump slot with a diffuse color

Unsure by your response, but just use vray for everything (lights, materials, cameras... rendering).

But just wanted to chime in: if you're doing a marvelous designer test you couldn't have chosen a worse subject matter. There's no reason to even use Marvelous designer to make a pillow. Do something more challenging/interesting.

i see your point herf and it would be pretty simple to model that cushion using noise and ffd modifier for the creases but just wanting to know every workflow a studio company uses.

No, my point was that the company you're trying to impress won't be impressed. If you're an expert in marvelous designer it would take less than 30 seconds to make a pillow like that (minus the tassles). You should maybe try something else that shows off a few cool techniques.
