Making max run faster
show user profile  AntiCitizen
ol i'm working on a car race animation in max but the compuer is not handling it and everytime i move the frame slider on the timeline its jerky, now my comp has 3 gig of ram, i was wondering how i could assign more memory to max rather than the rest of the computer, is there a way to do this?

Google the 3gb switch. But it could be your graphics card if its viewport issues.

Max uses as much memory as it needs, but RAM has zero effect on viewport speed, thats mostly your graphics card and cpu

ram doesn't help viewport? does it allow for bigger scenes though? that's what it seems to have done when i got my 3gb more ram.

Yes it allows for bigger scenes to run and render, it wont help the timeslider, that's viewport speed

But max can only use a max of 2gb ram without the switch. Thats a windows thing. The switch has helped me loads with big scenes at work.

This is why you build proxy model and animate those and then replace them with high poly models down the line, working on animation with full poly models isn't a very good idea.
