making container hinge
show user profile  vkhu
Can anybody tell me how to make a smooth looking hinge like this? Specifically, the part that connect the door and the cylinder:

I tried to use all tricks I know up till now like chamfer, turbosmooth (all kind of smooth actually), bending cylinders but somehow it just look not as smooth and very fake.

I don't need any detailed tutorial, just tell me what technique I need to apply and that would be all. Hell, even if you don't feel like it, just tell me what phrases to search in max's help file. Any help would be appreciated.

Just model the inner part, looks fairly simple. Then grab the outside 'edge' and press 'create shape from selection', this will create the outer spline shape and then up the iterations.

@donvella: up the iterations of what? I don't see any iteration adjustment option for the spline.

The spline should have the option of interpolation type, choose something like Uniform and increase the number of steps to create more definition.. Also, selecting the actual vert/spline-points and right-clicking and changing to smooth might also have an impact..

@ScotlandDave: no such option as uniform under the interpolation box. I tried to increase the step but to no avail.

I just checked and it seems that if the vert isn't a bezier or bezier corner interpolation won't work. You can convert any vert to one of these by right clicking on it and selecting one of these options like so:

Then click the things in the red circles (apart from interpolation, I just put a circle around it to show that I set it to 0 for this pic):

And adjust the interpolation:

Well then buddy, how about a little bit of ingenuity, perhaps some trial and error, a little bit of research, maybe find out what all those buttons do.. make that cognitive leap into the land of `ahh i see that was so obvious`..

[edit] There ya go Herfst has done it for you..
