Mac vs Windows vs Linux vs ... - The Definitive Guide
show user profile  Kajico
None of them you fronats, it's about as productive as trying to compare Maya vs. Softimage vs. 3DS Max. They are just tools with unique and varying purposes, in the end you get what you want based on your needs and personal preferences.

People will waste hours arguing which Linux distribution is better, all the while they could've gone "eeny meeny miney mo", picked one and had their project finished already.

An OS is about as good as it's user/administrator.

Just like in 3D the software is about as good as the artist using it.

I use Mac and Windows at work, at the same time, all from the same keyboard and mouse. I have linux terminals open everywhere on my desktop. Why such a hybrid system?

Well I administer servers, I use my Mac as my primary workstation because I can use commercial software but still have a native *nix based system and tools. I use my Windows machine for communicating with coworkers via email, messenger etc, and to also have a Windows platform to troubleshoot from. A majority of the servers we work with are Linux based, especially our infrastructure ones.

Outside of server administration work I've also worked across a few studios, using either Mac and Windows workstations. Honestly if most of your work involves opening a program, opening a file, modifying the file saving out that file, I'm not sure what the hangup is for most people. If you've ever had to transition from one 3D program to another 3D program you should be used to learning shortcuts into muscle memory and being able to switch between that memory easily when you identify what platform you're on.

Don't worry, AS will find a way to disagree with you.

You can't beat Mac build quality though. Opening up my Mac pro at work is always a pleasure!

it's the difference from the perspective of a car driver vs maintainance engineer vs. r & d engineers.

some just drive, some have to service the car & others design the car or components for it.

the driver doesn't give a shit, as long as it gets him from a-b, the mechanic doesn't care as long as he can service it, but the r&d engineer needs everything just right to make a better car than his competitors.

whoppers have a far better build quality than macs.

@dave - he isn't wrong but there are difficulties under the hood on windows. possibly on mac too but haven't played with one yet.
