are there any advanced excel users in here?

I have imported xml data into excel but because the xml data has lists inside lists it wont allow me to export it :(

I have searched google and everyone comes to the same problem and theres no solution to it that i have found.

Thought there might be some hard core excel users here who could help :p

With XSLT you can transform XML documents to any other format

It's not a converter, it's a language, you got to learn it.
But all XML files might just not be compatible with excel format. XML is nested and excel is 2d tabular data.

If you've got the XML Schema file for the XML file you've got, it should be easy.
If not, not so much.

Depends on how much you need it. Might not be worth it at all for converting a few files

Are you looking for a one time export or something you can reuse? If it is one time export, I can write the XSLT for you and run the data through it so you get the output you need in a flat file. Post your email and I will shoot you a note to get more details to see how I can help.

Horizon - I have only the xml file. I thought the xml file was the xml schema file? What is the difference?

I import the xml file into excel and then map the cells accordingly. But I cannot export as an xml because there are "lists inside lists" that's what it tells me. I cannot modify the xml so there aren't any "lists inside lists" because that's just the way it was created by a developer. So I need to work out how to bypass the error in excel.

tayok - This is interesting, basically the project is a UK flash map where pins can be added via xml, which have descriptions for each location and are positioned via long/lat see
if you go to the download section you can actually download the map for free including the xml data file that I am using, mine just has slightly different information but the format is the same.

The client has requested to be able to update the map with new locations and descriptions as and when. The client has no knowledge of xml so I decided excel was the way forward so that they can easily input data and re-save the spread sheet as an xml, also another factor is that the data I am receiving from the client is also in excel format so to copy and paste information for locations is simple.

This will be a regular occurrence for the client as they will be updating new locations every month or so.

My email is jpcutler85 at google mail dot com. Thanks for your help.

How come you say you have only xml file to import if the client is giving you excel and you need to export to xml.

And I thought importing the xml gave you the error. But if the error occurred only after you messed with it in excel, how's that related to xml?

And if the XML file is built properly according to it's schema, the XSLT would be reusable, not just one time only.

I'm a bit confused now by all this, but if it works out for you, doesn't matter :P

Because the interactive flash map relys on xml data. so the excel data from client needs to be added to the xml but in order to do that it needs to be done in excel because that's the way the client wants to add data.

I don't think this is an excel issue. I think you may just be trying to use Excel as the xml editor here, and the true requirement may be you need a way to edit xml and send it back and forth. I will shoot you an email and we can follow up together.

Since I am such a novice at 3d, finally some way I can contribute to the forum.

horizon, you are 100% correct, the xslt is reusable. If he has to do it over and over, though, he would need a script or exe to run the xml through the xslt, so I was wondering if I could go the lazy route and just do it the one time for him from Visual Studio, or if he would need the ability to repeat the process :)

So he does it in excel, you convert excel to xml and you give that to the app.
I still fail to see where there is IMPORT of xml INTO excel.

If you rename the .xlsx file (won't work with older .xls) to . zip, you can extract contents and find the date already in xml format.
I believe all data shoud be in the sharedStrings.xml file in the root of the zip.
See if you can do something with that. Some cleaning of the could will have to be done.

And why is the client insisting on using a certain format of the date, even if it's not quite compatible to what you need. Although any static data written in excel should be transferable to xml language, but not the other way around.
