lock a vertex or edge x,y,z position when using paint deformations in edit poly

Ok this has now driven me a little crazy for a year or so - but I use the paint deformations in edit poly regularly on topographic sites and I want the edges of my topographies to stay put - something in the graphite ribbon can do this maybe?

Paint Deformation is only applied to your sub-object selection or to all if no sub-object selection. In this case, just select what you want to paint.

You can lock your object selection (small pad lock icon center-bottom screen) to be sure you don't accidentally select another object while painting deformations.
