how do i lock child object's rotation to world?

i want to create a gyroscope that actually behaves like gyroscope without needing to be key framed.

i have three objects in a linked hierarchy: parent>child X> child Y

i simply want the child objects to maintain their orientation on the x & y axes respective, regardless of the orientation of the parent objects.
can any one help?

Modify panel / Link info / inherit

You can choose what is inherited from the parent, or not.

thanks for the input weet

its still not working though.
its fine if the parent rotates on the same axes as the child (y). But when the parent rotates on the x axes, "child Y" dose a 90 degree flip and stays there.
and if the parent moves on both x & y axes at once, child Y gos all over the place.

any ideas?

You can bodge it by putting lookat constraints on the children. Make them stare at a dummy.

Have you tried orientation constraints?
